In Case Study #2, my student, Jessica, is a 15 year old female with an intellectual disability. She attends a high school where she is enrolled in the Special Education program. In addition, Jessica parents seems to be very protective of her and does not require her to assist around the home. Because of that, Jessica is completely reliant on her parents for her basic skills needs such as ironing, cleaning and cooking, and using public transportation. One of the stages that our family is dealing with is the “Becoming an Adult stage”. According to the text by Herbert Goldenberg and Irene Goldenberg (2008), when a child becomes an adult and leave home they usually stay connected to the family. My daughter will be turning 20 January 18, 2012 and she still lives at home. She is a student at the local community college and she is also working. Having her at home during her educational endeavors is good and bad. I feel it is good in that we know where she is every night and that we feel she is in the safety of her own home. Also knowing that she is not at some university partying is very satisfying. I also feel by her being at home allows her to focusing on her school work. On the other hand, she is not living independently allowing her to make her own decisions. She needs to live independently in order for her to make it in society.…

The transition from home to an early years setting may start when the family visits the early years setting, or through a home visit. A home visit or a visit to the setting before a child starts there gives the staff a chance to find out what the parents are expecting from the setting. All this helps parents and children to make the transition from being at home to starting in a group setting. The child that I work with in school has a range of difficulties from social communication difficulties to a speech and language problem. Everyday is different because he is so interchangeable, one day he will sit and work with me and the next he will not want anything to do with me, sometimes this makes it hard as most of the work we do is structured around work given by various professionals who come into school to support him (speech and language, education psychologist, communication and interaction team and learning support).
