A couple of the children appeared to have a greater knowledge of money and addition so whilst the rest of the table continued to discuss money I asked the remaining two to work out bigger sums i.e: how many 1 pence pieces were in two 10 pence pieces and how many 2 pence pieces made up 10 pence. Also how many 5 pence pieces were in 20 pence. I monitored their ability to count up in twos and fives they both…
The developmental progression for early number sense are counts all, shortcut sum, and counts on. Counts all is where the student will count all the objects that they are count whether it is physical or a representation of dots like on dice. They start with the first group and then move to the next group. After each group is counted they will count both groups together. The students next step in number sense and transitioning to addition is the shortcut sum level. The…
The work is shown out and all of the additions are correct. The book’s mathematics content is visible and effectively present throughout the entire story. Addition is clearly shown on almost every page and the diagrams and written work to solve each problem is also shown as part of the illustration. The student’s actual worksheets and notes are drawn out so readers can clue into his thinking process while working on them. For these reasons I would give it a 5 in this category as well. The book’s mathematics content is intellectually and developmentally appropriate for its audience of second graders. Along with being about addition it also discusses the topic of working together, and knowing the difference between tattling and telling when things need to be told. This is a huge topic for students in early elementary school. I would give it a 5 for this. I would give it a rating of a 4 for the category of the book facilitating the reader’s involvement in, and use and transfer of, its mathematics. It is good but it doesn’t have any problems for the students to figure out or any activities that specifically go with it like the percentage book did above. The book’s mathematics and story complement each other well, a 5 for that as well. It can relate the addition to the story and make it fiction and not just straight facts. It makes it more…
1. During circle time the toddlers and I was discussing different things that you can wear in the winter time. I presented a variety of different clothing that people can wear during the winter. When I showed the toddlers a hat, they all began to point at there heads. When I noticed the response I immediately began saying the word hat and what it’s used for. Most of the toddlers were able to repeat the word hat and knew what the hat is used for.…

The curriculum gives pupils a solid grounding in all aspects of numeracy. In early years numeracy skills are developed practically in shape, pattern, counting, sorting and measuring. Teachers in reception classes follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum which includes problem solving, reasoning and Numeracy for pupils 40-60+ months old. This is developed through pupils exploring, playing games and through teacher planned activities. The areas for Foundation Stage are:…

Personally I would not want to use this book in my classroom because it was a bit confusing. I, myself, had to go back and reread parts of it because it wasn’t clear as to what was going on. Some of the abstract language may make it hard for students to focus on the book and understand it. The book’s mathematics content is correct and accurate so I would give this a 5 because there is nothing that isn’t correct. It shows the right numbers as even and odd, speaks about addition and subtraction in the right manner, speaks to symmetry, looks at x and y which could be used in functions and graphs, and other concepts. The book’s mathematics content is sort of visible and effectively presented but it could have presented in a much clearer way. I would rate this a 3. For one, it talks about the numbers as people and doesn’t say directly that it is the numbers that are even and odd and not just the people. The other concepts of math that it speaks about aren’t either. When they talk about the children, x and y, range, and more, most students who were to read the book wouldn’t not have learned about these concepts yet and it would go right over their head. If students don’t know about these concepts they aren’t going to understand a lot of what the book is referring to. I would say this book is made for early elementary grades and they don’t talk about things such as range until way…
The book was about a young boy trying to follow his uncle’s footsteps of being a mathematician. With too much confidence,…
Moreover, it stimulates the children’s capability to think deeper through creative math storytelling, flowchart, concept map, tree diagram, picture riddle, haiku, cryptogram, secret code decoding, simulation, role playing, jingle or rap composing, reflection journal writing, and problem solving. This game is enjoyable and you can learn fast about computing and applying the different operations in Mathematics.…
