Civil War Essay There were many contributions that were made during the Civil War that have made an impact on us today, including weapons, medicine, and fighting tactics. These have all improved with today’s technology. They have also become more sophisticated. Weapons have increasingly become more efficient and accurate, but they have had a model to work with. First, you have cannons and mortars. These could use a wide range of ammunition and had a long range. A mortar could fire with a range of two miles. The cannon and mortar could fire grape shot, cannon balls, bar shot, and other ammunition. Cannons were used on ships later on throughout history, such as merchant and pirate ships. Another contribution was the Gatling gun, or the machine gun. Instead of being hand cranked like it was back then, today’s machine gun is automated. The Gatling gun model is still used in today’s war, just greatly improved. Last is the Springfield rifle. This rifle has a design that is still used today; it just has better accuracy, range and efficiency. Medicine has greatly influenced history and modern time. The American Red Cross, created by Clara Barton during the Civil War, still exists today and is going strong. The Red Cross has especially helped people through natural disasters, such as hurricane Katrina. The Civil War’s anesthetics and painkillers are still used today. Chloroform, Ether, Morphine, and Opium are widely known and used. Opium, however, is an addictive drug and people fought with China for it during the Opium War. One concept of amputation saved many people from bleeding to death. One man came up with the idea of sewing up arteries and veins with sutures. The North used silk sutures, whereas the South used cotton sutures. Civil War tactics and American Revolutionary War tactics are commonly used today. The used of lines and rows were used during many wars, such as World War I and World War II. One tactic

Warfare and technological advancements have been intertwined ever since innovation has been pointed in the direction of war. The biggest innovation that changed the landscape irrevocably, would be the introduction of gunpowder weapons in Europe. The adoption of gunpowder weapons in essence forced every country that wanted a chance in war, to adopt the same technology. Innovation in military technology is more adaptive than civilian innovation. A clear example can be seen with European inventors having a decisive edge over Incan, Aztec, and Asian foes, then the world following with Gunpowder weapons and century methods of war being suddenly outdated.…

Although many people believed it to be moral, there was an equally big population that did not. This created a big division between the two regions of America. The North and the South were two enemies on different sides; this held true when the Civil War took place. But even so, there were lots of conflicts that led up to the war. The issue over slavery grew, and spread to other things, directly affecting them. The medical practices used during the Civil War era were not very advanced and took a big toll on the war itself. Many of the soldiers, both Union and Confederate, returned home with missing body parts, were shell shocked, or were psychologically traumatized. These medical practices during this time did not do much to help the lives of the soldiers other than doing the bare minimum to keep them alive, which in many cases, resulted in infection and disease. All of this consequented in the soldiers being affected both mentally and physically, as well as the lives of a tremendous amount of men were ruined.…

Alexander Hamilton once said, “When the sword is once drawn, the passions of men observe no bounds of moderation.” The American Civil War came into being due to these “passions of men”, and the average men, who went into the war with such gusto, got slapped into the harsh reality of war. The Civil War ushered in a new era of fighting, with new tactics, new weapons, and new strategies. However, as the first of major changes, the transition took time, and that time cost the lives of thousands of men through no fault of their own. This war was one of change, and the soldiers that fought it changed the most. Civilians strode into the war in garish “uniforms,” soldiers clashed with their former countrymen, killers dealt with the…

If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…

The civil war spawned some of the most gruesome battles in america’s history, but besides the immeasurable loss of life what truly made the war such a significant event in America's history? After the Union victory in the plight to end slavery and provide equity among the races, life changed many ways for blacks and whites, but some things never changed despite the efforts of Abraham Lincoln and his supporters. The country was split in two with the North in power and the South creatively opposing the fair treatment of blacks. The conclusion of the civil war brought many positive and negative repercussions that changed the balance of the United States and eventually led to the nation we have today. Much of this is shown in…
