Thesis
This outline has been formulated to highlight a few of the purposes and methods of classroom-based literacy assessment which include the following: the reasoning behind instruction, assuring that learners are moving forward in their learning, monitoring the adequacy of the lessons, and measuring the learner’s success with the objective.
I. Planning for Assessment
a. Conclude the reading level of a learner by utilizing running records and informal reading inventories.

One of the final methods in assessing a learner’s progress is to utilize the rubrics and checklists that the student has marked and evaluate the work that the student has completed. This could be considered a sort of checks-and-balances step between the teacher and her pupils. This assures that students are working hard to do their very best. It also allows the teacher to view whether or not the student is completely confident with the manner in which they are utilizing the rubrics provided. Reflecting
a. Portfolios are utilized to place emphasis on work that demonstrates growth in learning.
i. To reflect means that a student should have a collection of his own work on which to look back. This work should be the best a student was able to produce at the time of completion. The work that is collected up until the end of the school year can easily be reflected on to show the learner’s purposeful growth in his academics.
b. Written reflections by the learner that discuss habits in classwork and successes in school.
i. These reflections are written by the student and discuss the accomplishments that the student has come to realize since the beginning of the school year. The wonderful thing during this time is that students have different ways of reflecting on their accomplishments using portfolios and through their writing. It is a time to reminisce and feel proud of all that has been achieved.
c. Thoughtful reflection by the instructor on the accomplishments and goals reached by students.
i. This is the time the teacher uses to reflect on her teaching practices in the classroom. Effective teaching is evident when students are able to demonstrate a deep understanding in the skills that were set forth before them. Of course, not all students will be successful for various reasons. What the teacher needs to remember is that if a student fails to rise to the occasion, what could have been done differently to allow this student to
