As you reflect on this week’s readings, discuss the most important competencies a Master’s prepared nurse leader should have for your chosen specialty CSM, INF, NED. How do these competencies guide your own practice? Does your career plan include the competencies you have identified? How important is specialty certification for today’s master’s prepared nurse?…
The second strategy that is important for nurse leaders is the ability to create an environment of care. Nurses have a responsibility to care for their patients and families but the nurse leader also must care for the staff members. There is a direct correlation between staff members that feel valued and cared about and the…
Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is an American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) approved title for nurse leader prepared at master’s level to oversee health care delivery system in any settings where care is offered. The changes necessitated by healthcare reform and consequences of the economy are challenging hospital administrators to decide how they will thrive and respond. A change instituted by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at the hospital where I am employed is the discontinuation of special pay practices. The special pay practices involved are compensation for 40 hours per week when actual worked hours are 36 and compensation for at least a 4 hour minimum. This change has a positive financial impact which allows for growth of the organization. However, if not managed…

The IOM report also suggests that the care a nurse provides in today’s world, as well as in the future, involves complex critical decisions and care for seriously ill patients. These increased demands along with innovative technology used for patient care only increase the level of education, training, and requirements for a nurse. Furthermore, the education will help nurse’s be better, “equipped them with competencies to be able to take part in information of health policies, financing decisions, leadership, and quality improvement (IOM report 2010). The increasing number of baccalaureate prepared nurses will translate into increased numbers of MSN’s, and doctorates prepared nurses. These nurses will fill the ever-growing demand for providers and researchers across the profession. To answer the call of the IOM, the AACN is developing a new position called the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). The CNL will be a master’s degree level nurse and will, “oversee the care, coordination for patients, assess risks, develop quality improvement strategies, facilitate interprofessional communication, and implement evidence-based solutions at the point of care” (AACN,…
The nurses would have increased independence, job satisfaction, and be accountable for valuable contributions, by providing high-quality care. In addition to nursing practice and education, solid leadership skills are necessary to understand the vision of a transformed health care system. Even though community doesn’t perceive nurses as leaders, all nurses should be prepared with strong leadership skills to design, implement, and evaluate the ongoing reformed health system. “The IOM report recommends that nurses play such leadership roles, are vital to advance a meaningful, effective, and sustainable quality health system (Porter- O’Grady,…
In addition, the report also recommends nurses to be full partners with the physicians and other members of the healthcare team to effectively increase the quality of care given to the patients (National Research Council, 2013). Because nurses are such strong advocates for patients, it would truly benefit the patient to have nurses participating in leadership roles. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, embedding leadership development into the nursing curriculum will have a positive effect on the amount of nurses fulfilling leadership roles in their healthcare setting (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, n.d). As a nurse, I have seen plenty of new graduates over the years. As time goes on, it is evident how better prepared and more motivated the new graduates are from the previous graduates for these leadership roles.…
The IOM report recommends to provide opportunities for nurses to assume leadership roles and serve as full partners in health care. According to (ffne.org), nursing leaders must act as full partners with physicians and must be accountable for their own contributions to delivering high quality care while working collaboratively with leaders from other health professions. To become a nurse leader, one has to get higher level of education that is master's or doctoral and should have great leadership skills. In order to ensure that nurses are ready to assume leadership roles, nursing education programs need to embed leadership related competencies throughout and should have leadership development and mentoring program available (nacns.org).…
A Clinical Nurse Specialist is a clinical expert who also has an advanced education and shares some of the same abilities and practices of an NP. They can also provide direct patient care services including, health assessment, health promotion, and prevention, as well as the management of health issues. However, CNS’s specialize in areas of nursing that improves nursing care through education, consultation, and research. The roles of CNS’s contain five major components consisting of expert clinical practice, clinical leadership, consultation, education, and research. (Buppert, C. 2012).…
According to the IOM, better patient outcomes can be achieved by working together “in a context of mutual respect and collaboration” (IOM, 2011, p. 223). To contribute to this outcome, nurses need to acquire strong leadership skills through higher education and become more involved in issues such as those concerning health policy, thereby transforming to “thoughtful strategists” (IOM, 2011, p. 223). The report strives to empower nurses to lead “at every level and across all settings” (p. 225).…
To me, being a professional nurse leader means helping other achieve their highest potential though education and competency training. According to Zimmerman (2013), the nursing professional assists and leads nursing staff though changes in technology, clinical outcomes and the need for new models of care. As I obtain additional education and knowledge in leadership my perception of the role of the nurse will change from a clinical, direct patient care model to a complex system of policy, leadership, technology, community health, clinical outcomes and evidence based practice nursing. My view of nursing will be broadened as I learn the framework behind leading and managing other nursing staff.…

How realistic is it to expect health care workers to model mental, physical, and spiritual health? If Americans tend to be overweight, underactive workaholics who experience burnout, why should health care workers be any different?…
Question! “Healthcare organisations should practice a relational view of leadership that encompasses the importance of both leaders and followers in the leadership process” (Central Queensland University, 2015). Before answering this question it is important that a closer look at the key components and dynamics that shape and influence both leadership and followership. This paper will question what leadership is, what are the traits and characteristics that make a good leader and how leadership can influence nursing practice.
