As a result of this, the learning disability student nurses need to know why collaborative working is important in their profession. Furthermore, as nurses we have a duty of care to protect the vulnerable service user as stated in the (NMC, 2015; UK DH Care Act, 2014; UK DH, 2009 & 2010). Psaila (2015) suggest that collaborative working ensures the smooth transition of service user from one service provider to another such as moving from children services to adult services. Similarly, six people with a learning disability died as a result of poor care and institutional discrimination they experienced from the health care staff of the National Health Service (Mencap, 2007). The collaborative working promotes the commitment of professional and increase the knowledge of professionals (Smith, 2015) such as when professionals work collaboratively to agree on an intervention for a service user.
Chong et al. (2013) state that effective collaborative working is very important to the health and safety of the service user and decision-making. Collaborative working helps in decision-making because when professionals collaborate they share experiences this may lead to quality care and better experience for the server user. However, it may also lead to a delay in decision-making and poor experience for the service user (Trapani, 2014). In addition, collaborative working may lead to unclear boundaries among professionals collaborating this may lead to safety concerns for the service
