How to establish respectful, professional relationship with children and young people
It is essential for a teacher assistant to establish positive relationship with children and young people you can establish respectful professional relationships with children and young people by doing the following:
Give children and young people the opportunity to express themselves
Give children the opportunity to give their ideas, feelings and let them express themselves by using their own words.
For example; give children thinking time and make groups to do activities and ask them what they think about how they performed?
Give them full attention when listening
We need to listen to them attentively and respond appropriately to their questions. But sometimes few children seek attention without any appropriate reason, we can ignore what the child is saying but we must not ignore the child, in that situation we can respond them by saying politely “ok I’ll think about it latter” and to divert their attention give them any activity or task.
Show you're approachable
In an educational environment you need to behave in such a manner that no one hesitates to talk to you, by doing this those children and young people who are facing difficulties or problems in studies or otherwise, they can come to you without any hesitation.
Give them support
Support them in their studies, extracurricular activities and problems they might be facing. By giving support to the children who need it you can make them stand equally to those who don’t need any help.
Show commitment
You need to show that your loyalties are with them and they can share anything with you and assure them that it will remain a secret,
