This novel displays the benefits that can be gained from taking a step out of personal comfort zones. Bilbo was pushed from his comfort zone when Gandalf and the Dwarves looking to reclaim their mountain, came to add Bilbo to their party. During the adventure that followed, Bilbo was put into situations and conflicts that forced him to make quick decisions and take initiative in order to keep himself and the group alive. These are things that Bilbo had no experience with and where outside his usual activities. But because he was forced to do things he was not prepared for and where outside of his comfort zone, he grew as a person. He developed a solid basis of self-confidence, gained new experiences that changed his perspective of his world, and learned how to push through conflicts and difficulties through the use of creativity and quick-wittedness. When he returned to The Shire, his comfort zone had expanded form his neighborhood and the other hobbit's societal expectations, due to his rise in self-confidence and expanded perception of middle earth and it's inhabitants.
