July 2nd, 1962 Sam Walton opened the first Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas. Walmart is a name that is commonly known in every household across the United States of America. It’s right around the corner to nearly all Americans and a haven for bargain hunters, so people think. Walmart brings jobs and helps the economy when they move to the area. This is another misconception Walmart wants you to believe. Walmart actually is doing the exact opposite. Sure it creates jobs, poverty level paying jobs with less than forty hours a week and no benefits. People who own and operate their own businesses, who actually stimulate their local economy, are at risk for going bankrupt and losing everything they have. Why would people want to spend money when they can get a similar product at Walmart for half the cost? There’s a simple answer to that question, people don’t want to spend money they don’t have to. Millions of people in the United States are living paycheck to paycheck working minimum wage jobs. These people can’t afford to buy products from a local family run store. The only places they’re able to go and get everything they need is Walmart and other big box businesses who can offer cheap…

Who's going to know?” Kitchen practices in relation to food health and safety, in truth, have been evolving. Microbial activities, including bacterial benefits and detriments, have been undergoing a huge amount of demystification. A number of practices and measures believed to be safe - even healthy - in the past have been proved otherwise. A few of these have been compiled by food microbiologist and Food Safety Information Council vice president Cathy Moir:…

In today’s American Society, people yearn for quick and healthful meals. According to food research firm Technomic, 47 percent of Americans say they want healthier fast food options, but only about 23 percent actually order them (Sniegowski). An individual often subconsciously orders foods that look enticing in pictures or from companies that declare false information about the food in the advertisements; this enables fast food chains to operate profitably. A good fast food restaurant chain should have clean, simple and quality food with prices that can be affordable on the daily. Usually fast food Mexican restaurants are cheap and seem enticing but the food doesn’t meet the standards of nutritious and qualitative meals. In contrast Chipotle is a Mexican-style fast food restaurant that specializes in using meat that is obligated to satisfy the strict protocol for the treatment of animals. The company has a trademark called “Food with Integrity” that it uses to validate all of its meat…

A genetically modified food or GM food product is defined as “meat and edible plants modified through genetic engineering” (Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, 2015). Furthermore, human beings have engaged in the process of genetically modifying plants and animals, with selective breeding practices within identical species, “since the beginning of civilization” (Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, 2015). However, current methods of genetic modification can cross species boundaries, which require suppressive techniques to ensure the foreign genes are accepted by the target plant or animal (Genetically Modified (GM) Foods, 2015). Indeed, this process has led to significant debates regarding the safety of the products that contain GM ingredients and whether these products should be clearly labeled to assist consumers in making an informed choice.…

Remember that nice juicy steak you had for dinner last night, well chances are that, that steak contained antibiotics that are the cause of many of the superbugs in the news lately. There is a lot of controversy around the use of antibiotics in livestock and the risks or benefits of using it, but for the most part the risks outweigh the benefits. Our large corporate ranch in northwestern Montana should not use antibiotics in our feed because most of it wouldn’t help the livestock anyway, antibiotics are already over used, and there is a growing market for antibiotic free meat.…

Food shortage, world hunger, an starvation have been a big problem for the world. Scientist are trying to grab a hold of these problems before matters get any worse. Food shortage, world hunger, and starvation are three reasons as to why scientists have decided to modify foods. GM foods are a new genetically modified way to "improve" crop production, but these new improvements are not as helpful as scientists planned them to be. GM foods should play no role in the global food supply because GM foods have no beneficial role within humans lives.…

I am currently a student at Delphos Jefferson Senior High School, and we recently read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser in our senior English class. It is a nonfiction novel that discusses the dark side of American fast food. As we’ve been reading, I’ve realized that a large amount of students at Jefferson Senior High drink soda purchased at school-offered vending machines. While these students are young adults and can make their own health related decisions, our responsibility as a school is to ensure that students receive healthy treatment. I understand that soda machines offered in our school are under the circumstances of corporate advertising; a practice that grants our school extra money towards general funds.…

There is no doubt that poverty is an issue in America; according to Feeding America, 13.5% of Americans are considered impoverished (Hunger in America). The class of people known as the “working poor” often get the brunt of this inequality, since many of them work at minimum wage jobs, such as in fast food restaurants. However, these jobs are not always horrible, usually due to the companies and the CEOs behind them. Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company, has created great improvements for the workers at the coffee chain, even creating a program to pay for baristas’ college education. On the other hand, David Novak, the recently retired CEO of Yum! Brands, which owns KFC, Taco Bell, and others, shows no love for the restaurant workers, who work at minimum wage despite Novak’s huge salary.…
