Constellations At The Old Globe Theatre Play Analysis
On April 23, 2016, I went to see the play Constellations at the Old Globe Theatre at Balboa Park. Nick Payne is the writer of this production and it was directed by Richard Seer. This show was 70 minutes long with no intermissions. When walking into the theatre, I did not know what to expect. I did not do any research to find out what this show was about, but, I was still excited to see it. I noticed when entering the theatre that there were small, blue lights hanging off the ceiling and the stage was in the shaped of a hexagon, the resembled a honeycomb. As I was watching the play, I realized that that the playwriting was not in a linear format that we are usually used to seeing in theatre productions and it was confusing and hard to follow …show more content…
Since each scene was sent in multiple different parallel universes there were different outcomes to how they were resolved. I believe the main conflict that they kept resulting back to was the fact that Marianne was diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma multiforme in the frontal lobe of her brain and was told that only one third of the people diagnosed with this cancer live for a year. In one alternate universe, she is told that with surgery and a little bit of chemotherapy she would make a full recovery. In another alternate universe, she decides she wants to go abroad and live out the rest of her life. The climax of the play is when Roland and Marianne decided to split up. Marianne admitted to Roland that she was sleeping with someone from work and they had a big fight about it and split …show more content…
There were no costume changes or any props. There costumes were regular every day, casual style. The set had a very spacey, feel to it. The lighting was slightly dim. I thought it was very effective of creating a sort of multiverse atmosphere. I do believe a few props would have helped better understand what was going on in the play but if you pay attention to just the dialogue, it will all make sense in the end without the need for propr. I though these actors really complimented each other. They had really good chemistry on stage. I felt that thier acting was very believable. In the scenes where the two characters talk about Marianne’s cancer, it is a very emotional scene that involves tears. But, it quickly changes to a more upbeat scene and the actors were able to smoothly transition back and forth between the happy and more emotional scenes. I thought these actors did a phenomenal job in this production of Constellations. I did not recognize who these actors were but they are extremely

The producers couldn’t have hired better actors for the roles of Thomas and Victor and the script was as if it wasn’t even a script. It seemed like it just came so naturally to the characters. If someone came to me asking for examples of a movie with really good acting, I would probably recommend this movie, but otherwise. I would say not to waste your time and watch something more enjoyable, like the romantic comedy “The Wedding…

All the elements in the show went perfectly with the actors, the sets, and the lighting. The whole stage was used and the performers moved around throughout the entire stage. The pace of the production seemed to be right. I thought it might have dragged out a little but picked up in the secound act.…

To be completely honest, I would have to say that majority of the acting was very mediocre. I know it wasn’t supposed to be like something off of Broadway but I expected a lot more, and I felt like only a couple of actors came through with that. The acting was not terrible, but it wasn’t spectacular either. I felt like some characters were not putting their all into their characters. I also felt like some people should not have been casted into the roles they had received. Many times a background character would outshine a main character during the performance. Pertaining to the acting, I think that the fact that it was a musical added more stress to the actors which consequently could have placed a strain on their acting abilities. This is because they were most likely more concerned with their vocals. Something I did like in their acting was the fact that they used little children, I found that very adorable.…

Though when I saw the play for the first time, I realized that the set that I saw was only a small part of the entire set. In addition to the the pox house that was set up with an amazing amount of detail with all of the little trinkets on the shelves, the lights and sound effects also added to the level of greatness. The colors of the lights would accurately match the mood of a scene or set the tone. This is essentially what lights are supposed to do in a play, but it is sometimes overlooked in small school productions. With regards to the sound effects, I was a bit taken aback by the real life aspect of it.…

They play was quite an interesting play with its use of comedy and tragedy. The actors did a terrific job on portraying the characters. The set was small so it was much easier to see their reactions. The introduction to the play was pretty unique with those people in tight pants and glitter all over everybody in the lobby. They never broke character no matter what went on in the lobby. Later they used as prompts on stage which was pretty interesting because at times I was so into the play I forgot they were there acting as a car or a door.…

The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places, making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and looked authentic. Some of the notable mentions are Prince Pedro’s uniform, the watchmen’s uniforms, and all the costumes in the ball scene. The costumes helped the audience remember which characters are which, and make the play more memorable.…

The style in which the play was performed was presentational although there are some parts of realism because situations like these actually do happen. The actors played multiple characters and morphed into each one. The morphing shows visible changes of character. They had great versatility of characters and played each one with passion for the role. The facial expressions they used seemed to add to the way they acted and made us, as an audience believe their roles much more. Other presentational aspects include the use of direct address and poetic narration throughout the performance.…

Every character stayed true to his or her role and that played believable parts. Everyone had great acting skills that enable them to tell the story. There were some choices that I loved and some that I did not. The choice to make Violet weak was great, but the choice to make her defenseless was not great. Another choice that I did not like was the tone of their voices.…

Harrison’s stage directions gives the performers room to powerfully use the props and sets to symbolize the true feelings of each character. I experienced this from watching a production of “Stolen” by the Sydney Theatre Company. The five actors were always repositioning their beds in the institution across the stage to highlight how stability and security were unavailable to them in the ‘homes’, this also showed the emotional impact on each character of always feeling like they are hiding or on the run from authority figures. As an audience member I really felt each characters pain through the directors use of the elements of drama within the performance, it added a perception of realism and deepness to each characters aura.…

The acting was terrific in this play, I was amazed by how all the characters were not just able to stay in their roles, but those who played different roles were able to fluidly transition from one role to the other. In particular, I was captivated by the actor who played the old man watching the fire, not only was he hilarious, he also depicts the life of an old retired person very well. The fact that a man is so perplexed by just a fire shows…
