People believe everyone should have an opportunity to advance if they are willing to put in the work and have the ambition to succeed. The idea is that if you have talent and drive, you will ultimately succeed because you have all the same rights and opportunity as everyone else. This however, may seem true in theory but is not actually the case for people of the United States. Not everyone has the same advantages to succeed and everyone has different experiences but this does not translate to those who have not been affected by the same issues. This is why people are more willing to agree with the government when it wants to set up education programs like, Head Start, because they see these programs as a way to give those at a disadvantage an equal opportunity to those who can pay more for a better education. The same people however, may disagree with types of programs like welfare because they believe it is not fair for hard working people to pay for those who they feel do not deserve it. These lower class citizens are seeing as undeserving because they are poor and in our society, the individualist belief is that you are poor because you have not worked hard enough. This has been the case from the very beginning and it was why we have a republican constitutional system, in order to set up rules that would keep the government from becoming too powerful. U.S. citizens do not like to give our government too much control over things because they believe it will try to also control our property, our rights, and our economy.
