Corrow Commons Analysis
A place of deep longing, that was Corrow Commons, to an elderly man and his son, who were all but familiar with the smell emanating from the dilapidated common, to which they once called their home. The cries of the damned called out to the old man, for him to ignore it behind a mask of a face which holds every voice dear, they were nostalgic… but he knew what needed to be done. His son was looking beyond the Corrow Common’s almost dreaded visage, knowing it was the one thing haunting his father’s otherwise clear mind. He was fumbling with the matches in his hoodie pocket while looking at his father’s motionless hands. The elder took it all in, the negativity encompassed him, causing a feeling of unease. Corrow Common’s betrayed the moonlight …show more content…
Well that is except one dapper fellow who the father came to despise, he would often come by to flaunt his wealth towards them, as he was a heir to a corporation let to die. Though he never deserved what came to him… as did everyone else who were buffeted by the cruel hand of fate. The son knew just about every single tenant, most of them were very rich, as was the father. No single person governed the Corrow Commons as it was under the joint ownership of multiple parties, most of whom had similar levels of authority within the common. The children were always from the most well off families, most would have a rare breed of canine to escort them. The only reason the man and his family were allowed a shelter there was a certain friendship with a peculiar governor. He and his son, and … her, they were allowed to …show more content…
The wife who at this moment had already set the table and was reading a good book by the fire said rather furiously “How long did your old man keep you? I was worried sick, I had good reason to think someone would find you buried in a ditch!” He laughed, a rather worried laugh, and said “Well I didn’t travel that far…” His wife set down her book and spoke rather loudly from the study “You still took your darn time, I mean really, keeping your wife waiting.” She stood and began walking toward the front door. His wife then said “Where is your old man?” He beckoned her closer as he had not the heart to shout across the room and said “I felt he needed some time to himself.” His wife’s eyes were closed as she spoke “What you mean to say is that you couldn’t bear to watch that dreaded place go up in flames.” He knew this to be true, that place represented, in essence his father. She sighed and motioned him to follow her to dinner, the candles were very short… this led to him apologizing, she of course ignored it and gave him a sliver of chicken with a fine amount of gravy. They had a rather enjoyable meal, though a single seat remained vacant throughout the

The second part of the poem ‘Nightfall’ continues the story of the child forty years from ‘Barn owl’, where she had lost her innocence by shooting an owl and this had resulted in a heavy hearted guilt which was caused by her unknowing and stubborn actions. The poem represents death closing in on the father, and the limitations of time on their relationship that was never experienced before in her younger years. The father, who in the first poem is depicted as an “old no-sayer”, is now held in high esteem, he is admired and respected as an “old king”. The extended metaphor “Since there is no more to taste ripeness is plainly all. Father we pick our last fruits of the temporal.” Appeals to our senses and is now an aural metaphor, it illustrates the father’s life becoming fulfilled or ripe, it has come near to its end and the father and child will now spend or pick the last moments of the father’s life together. Over time her appreciation of her father has changed, this is shown through “Who can be what you were?” and “Old King, your marvellous journey’s done.” She has realised the valuable life her father has led and the great loss that will be felt after he is gone. The child, now a grown woman learns another lesson about death, it can be quiet and peaceful, and “Your night and day…

“In a Common Tavern” by Thomas Thornburg is a poem about a woman and her daughter bravely fleeing from an abusive man. In this poem, Thornburg does a wonderful job of telling this woman’s story, by starting with the reasons she isn’t running away. It is not because that woman has a home in the north, or that she was originally from the north. He then backtracks to describe how the couple (woman and daughter) was happy…

She is pretty, but moderately pretty, not overdone or arrogant. The husband, however, has a "round, self-satisfied face." He is haughty and overconfident. The reader recognizes his self-centeredness and demeans him for it. The reader is told that the woman provides a "small but glossy birthday cake" for her husband's "Occasion." There is "one pink candle" in the center of the cake. The cake's appearance parallels with that of the wife's. Both are small and modest yet in their own way appealing. The wife has supplied a "little surprise" for the one she loves and she is very proud of it. The others dining at the restaurant react with a "pattering of applause" to support the woman and encourage her. The reader echoes this applause in his own mind in order to also help the woman. However, the reader at once discovers that the man "was not pleased." Brush then quotes the thoughts of the reader towards the husband's behavior with the reaction of "Oh, now, don't be like that." The author uses the words that she knows are in the mind of the reader. The woman is then seen to be crying "all to herself." Her husband has deserted her and she is left alone "under the gay big brim of her best…
