Have you ever thought about being a cosmetologist? A person who is called a cosmetologist or beautician. Cosmetology is a professional skill and practice of beautifying the face, hair, and body. Cutting, coloring, shampooing, hair styling are some of the things a cosmetologist specialize in. Cosmetology is a rewarding career that requires training and dedication.
Cosmetology started back in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptians were the first to show beauty in an high fashion. They used cosmetics in religious ceremonies like preparing the deceased for burial and also for personal beautification. Minerals, insects, and berries were used to create makeup. Wealthy people were only able to have baths at the time.Women wore colored makeup on their cheeks and lips but not their eyes. Lead makeup was used to make the skin look white. High hairlines, less hair on the body, high breasts, smooth skin, and smaller figures were attractive during these times (Beauty Standards Through The Ages).
Cosmetology has come a long way since those ancient times. Today, cosmetologists works in good lighted environment. Salons and barbershops are the most common places cosmetologists work although some may work in spas, hotels, or resorts. Some get a lease in other people’s shops for a booth, or they may become a licensed home beautician. Most people manage salons or open their own shop up.
A typical day for a cosmetologist is very busy. Cosmetologists are on their feets for long periods of time, so physical stamina is important. To avoid skin irritation stylists are recommended to wear protective gloves and aprons when dealing with chemicals of hair and nails. Many stylists work part-time but those who are self-employed workers may work longer hours.Work schedules include mornings and weekends and tend to be the most busy for salons and barbershops, but self- employed worker decided their own schedules (United States Department of Labor)
