Critical Reading: Distinguishing Facts and Opinions
Name : Rica Rahmania
Class : Ek
NIM : 1320091 Reading is a skill or activity of getting information from books. In the reading skill, there is an aspect known as a critical reading. Critical reading is a way to read quickly with certain amount time. Mostly, we use critical reading to read newspapers, text books, magazines etc. Sometimes, we should read again several times to fully understand the contents of text. Aside of that, in my reading class textbook is different because it has many materials. Each of its chapters consists of some topics, not just one. After having read and understand the topics, we can find facts and opinions within the text books. It is very difficult to differentiate between facts and opinions. In order to differentiate them, we need to understand what fact and opinion actually mean. Firstly, fact is something which is known to have happened or to exist, especially something for which proof exists, or about which there is information and no decision will be made till we know all. So, any happenings, events, conditions, or states that can be proven as true are fact. For example, “The late President Soekarno was born in 1901.” This is a fact because it could be easily proven that indeed presiden soekarno was born 1901. From that, we can try to read some other articles and take a fact sentence again. Different with fact, opinion is easier to identify than facts. An opinion is a personal judgment, feeling, belief or attitude. Opinion is also applicable to a judgment based on grounds insufficient to rule out the possibility of dispute. Such as, there is a person who has a statement: “Dangdut Music is Terrible”. Is it an opinion? Yes, it is an opinion. Why? It is a personal judgment, so it might be different with other people statements. In brief, both of facts and opinions very important in reading skill. We should know first the meaning of facts and opinions before reading an article, so we can judge a sentence as an opinion or a fact. If

Many students who struggle with reading ask why should we read, what is the point? The point is that being able to read opens you up a whole new world of knowledge and imagination. But to have that new world opened up you need to be able to comprehend what you are reading. The primary goal of reading is to determine the meaning of what the writer is communicating and make the most of that information. That’s why reading comprehension skills are so important. Without them the reader cannot gather any information and use it to efficiently function and enjoy the richness of life (Marshall).…

In "Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning" by Christina Haas and Linda Flower, the authors tells us in reading we should have strategies. The two main strategies they elaborate through out the passage are literary theory and cognitive research. Both take a huge part while reading to have a better understanding. As Haas and Flower say "'Critical reading' involves more than careful reading for content, more than identification of conventional features of discourse, such as introduction or examples, and more than simple evaluation based on agreeing or disagreeing"(170). That's why these strategies come in place, a good reader should be able to identify the topic sentence, supporting points, and conclusion. Students lack…

Facts can be answered by objective tests ("The Basic Concepts of Critical Thinking," 2013). A non-factual issue cannot be proven by experiments. The following statements are facts in paragraph two, “Wall street journal recently reported that unemployment has risen 4 percent. Also it says “In 2009 he signed an executive order.” In paragraph three, a factory worker was laid off in Michigan. In paragraph four, “The average American family now earns 5,000 dollars less per year.” In paragraph five, “Our high school football season was cancelled due to lack of funding. I believe these statements can be proven to be true or false.…

The article that we were assigned to read, made me a bit aggravated at some points. To start off, there were far too many contradictions in this article to be considered a "good read" in my opinion. The first thing that caught my eye while reading, was the giant, bold, blue paragraph sections that stated "fact." While reading numerous "fact" paragraphs, quite a few times I came across the phrase "most likely" "it was assumed" or "points to." These phrases, do not point to facts, nor do they belong in a facts paragraph. These phrases still point to doubt and uncertainty and for all the reader knows, can still be an opinion of the writer. Personally as a reader, when I place something in a fact or opinion category, I make sure that it is properly placed in its group. A fact, is something that is proven and definite, not something that can still be swayed into another group. Another contradiction that I saw, was stated in the first few "Fact" paragraphs, that every day is typically celebrated as a day of thanks for Native Americans. Every day is celebrated as thanksgiving. Then, in the last paragraph, it says that thanksgiving is a day of mourning for Native Americans. Thanksgiving serves as a day of thanks in the beginning of the article, then serves as a day of mourning in the…

In order for a child to excel in school they need to be well versed in reading therefore; I believe that it is vital for all children to learn to read. Not only should reading be a fun and enjoyable experience but something that influences the child to succeed in all subject areas. Reading is an integral part of life that needs to be mastered. A child can master the basics of reading in the early years and should be learned at that time due to the aggravation and frustration of learning those skills later on, as he/she gets older. Although there are many children and adults alike that hate to read it is our job to spark an interest in these children so they will find reading enjoyable. All of the aspects of reading should be equal and balanced in order for the child to learn. Although I loved reading when I was younger, I still had to ingrain this behavior into my own children so they could see reading could be enjoyable and that it was an everyday part of life.…
