Seven undergraduate students at the University of Maryland searched for an on campus dance company that would allow them to express their unique creative voices. At the time, no current dance team met their diverse cultural and creative needs. As a result, Dynamic dance team was formed.…

“Real leadership is leaders recognizing that they serve the people that they lead.” This quote, spoken by Pete Hoekstra, speaks volumes to the true essence of what it means to be a leader. Leadership is all about the people. Many people incorrectly assume that being a leader means that the people you lead are there to serve you. This presumption could not be more inaccurate. Being a leader means serving your teammates and being worthy of their respect and cooperation. I believe that Hoekstra’s quote applies to all forms of leadership- from being a captain of a sports team to being a Lead Scholar.…
My coaches and my team members did everything they could to make me feel apart of the team, they made sure I knew of practice times, meet times, and team bonding. I showed up at every meet to cheer my team on, and still connect with the existing team members and the new girls. At the end of the year banquet, my coaches presented me with the most spirited award. Staying connected with my team, and not letting an injury cause me to fade away from my favorite sport and my favorite group of people became my biggest priority. The true dedication to my team is what won me most spirited and made me feel connected to my team.…
Cheer is not just a sport. It is intense physical activity with a purpose- to serve as a motivation for the team. Taking two full sport seasons, the dedication and energy required from these young cheerleaders is unbelievable. For up to 2 1/2 hours a day, they work together to achieve their goal: perfect routines to make the Hilltop Football and Basketball teams engulf in victories. These devoted cheerleaders spent 3 days at Cheer Camp and one day at the District Camp, where they expanded their knowledge and creativity for our school. However, these days spent were not for competition, but for learning from each other. Still, their natural competitive nature filled their minds and actions, self-motivating them to execute their best efforts…
In seventh grade I used to be in marching band. I had done band in sixth grade as well, but this year it was marching band. I played the clarinet and I was pretty good at it. In the middle of the school year we had a parade that our band had to march in. It was something that I had never done before, so I was a little bit apprehensive about doing it. People who who were new to marching band like me were referred to as “newbies”, which wasn’t very many people. During marching band practices all of the “newbies” were put in the back because we didn’t really know what we were doing. Over time all the newbies got better, but that didn’t seem to apply to me. I could keep tempo and play my instrument while marching in sync with everyone and I would…
While I encourage most basketball players to go to college and advance their education to the next level, those special individuals whose athletic ability gives them the opportunity to provide for themselves and compete at the highest level should not be denied the opportunity based the current requirement that players must be 19 years old to play for the NBA. High school basketball players should be mature enough to make their own decisions about their career paths, so the NBA shouldn't deny them. Furthermore, other sports have employed teenagers for years with success.…
Participating on the Sutton High School cross country team has been one of the most rewarding yet stressful experiences of my life. For the past five years the Sutton cross country team has been a second home to me and season after season I return thirsting to vanquish a competitive fire. Although I'm ecstatic about competing this year, I was not always this happy about running. Five years ago I decided to try out for a sports team that involved less hand eye coordination (seeing how I have none) and tried out for the cross country team at my school. Almost immediately did I find out that a simple task like running could become much more strenuous not only on my legs and lungs but on the mind. While my body adjusts to the challenges of dirt…
Patriarchalism has been embedded in society for a long period of time. For the United States, the patriarchy dates back to the 17th century, a time when colonists were living on America’s soil. Patriarchalism is a society where men hold the most power, dictate how the society runs, and control over other members of the society. However, this system was not new to the women in the colonies. They had been living in the patriarchy for years in Europe.…
This program is important to me because I am interested in taking business courses and improving my dancing so that I may one day have a dance studio of my own. After high school I plan on going to college to pursue a career in dance and business. Dancing has been the biggest hobby of mine ever since I was three years old. My passion for dance has inspired me to try out for numerous things. First thing I have felt in love with was liturgical dancing which is usually seen in various churches. This is a style of dance that I have been doing for about eleven years. Within those eleven years I have choreographed eight of the dances I have performed as a solo and as a group. Cheerleading is another thing that had caught my interest. I have been a part of a cheerleading team…
Scholar athletes deserve to be given special treatment because we have to go above and beyond more than the average student. There are times that as a student athlete that you will have to miss class due to road trips. When I was a freshman, I was assigned two papers in one day and they were both due the very next day, because I had to leave for a basketball road trip and we would have been gone the entire week and I would be missing the due date that was assigned for each one of the assignments. My teachers did not accept emailed assignments and only accepted hard copies. Now on that particular day I did not get out of class until twelve, had practice from…
I have always been an athletic person. As far back as I can remember, I have been involved in sports and I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have sports apart of my life. Sports have meant so much to me over my years of growing up. I was always encouraged to be a part of different types of athletic programs. Sports are not for everyone, but playing a sport is definitely beneficial for high school students.…
Many people value dance in a different way. When I say the word “dance”, I do not mean the jumping up and down at a party; I mean ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and the many other styles in this world. Dancers are looked at as a piece of artwork, when they are so much more. Although they are bringing an artist’s piece to life, the dancers are the athletic aspect of the whole piece. Working just as hard or even harder, dancers are still not considered athletes. With all of the opportunities that athletes have these days I feel that it is important for dancers to be put into an athletic category. The demands of dancing are equivalent to all aspects of sports in regards to physicality, mental ability and general intensity.…
I walk around the dance floor awkwardly, looking for groups of people that I know well enough to be able to go and stand with and pretend like I’m part of whatever mind-numbing conversation they’re having. I check my watch for the fifth time in ten minutes, which is making time go even slower. It’s 8:50 I made the rule for myself to drop my first at 9 so I wouldn’t have to take the next until midnight.…
