Dental Hygienist Career Goals

Comm 1002 Voice and Diction- Voice and Diction would be very beneficial to my future career as a dental hygienist because I will be required to speak with patients. Even though dental hygienist don't communicate with their patients during the entire appointment it is necessary to be able to effectively express yourself with the patient. As a dental hygienist you want to make the patient feel comfortable therefore expressing yourself in a comforting manner may be required to accomplish this. A person who is shy and has a low tone of voice would be unfit for this position because you have to be able to communicate with others. Also, dental hygienists have to communicate with the dentist using proper terminology and speaking in a manner that is easy to comprehend.

Comm 4026 Health Communication- Health communication would be an essential course that would be beneficial to my career goals. As a healthcare worker a dental hygienist is a part of a team. This team consists of members such as the receptionist, dental assistant, and the dentist. This class would enable me to be able to communicate information about patients in a professional yet effective manner. If I am not able to effectively communicate with my team members this could result in issues with the company.
Comm 3010 Communication and Conflict- Communication and Conflict would also be a beneficial course for my career goals.
Conflict can arise between a patient and I or between me and a team member. This course will allow me to be able to know to act in a situation where conflict is present. I think that knowing how to react in a situation can help deescalate a situation from getting out of hand. Also, knowing how to react toward conflict could keep you from getting fired from the job. No matter what profession you are in, I believe that knowing how to deal with conflict in a professional matter is a very important
factor.

Comm 1018 Interpersonal Communication- I think interpersonal communication would be an interesting course for me to take. I enjoy being aware of others, predicting others intermost thoughts, nonverbal communicationm, and more. This course would allow me to have a better understanding about communication with humans and also give me insight to why others may communicate as they do.

I would consider communications as a major. The reason being is communications is an essential part of life. Every profession has some form of communication in it. Also communication is a part of our everyday lives as we interact with one another. An advantage to having communications as a major is being able to effectively communicate with others on various levels and settings. A disadvantage of communications as a major is being it being looked upon as a "easy major" however communications is a broad field that can lead to various job opportunities. I believe that there aren't any disadvantages to communications as a minor because it can only benefit your career choice rather than harm it.
