Dental Hygienist The career field that I am interested in is a dental hygienist. I am interested in this career field because I want to help people stay hygiene and have clean teeth. Dental hygienist has certain working conditions, post-secondary degree, and an average annual salary. Dental hygienist working conditions consist of wearing surgical masks, gloves to protect themselves and patients from diseases, and interacting with the patient. In this career field the type of work done is removing of tartar, stains, plaque from teeth, apply fluorides, take dental x-rays, educate patients about good hygiene techniques, etc. Dental hygienist personal qualities that are needed: patient, understanding, positive attitude, friendly, and passionate.
Possible places of employment is the U.S. Air Force, Kool Smiles, Schools, outpatient clinics, dentist office and offices of physicians. The post-secondary degree earned as a dental hygienist is an associate degree in dental hygiene, but bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene are available. The number of years required to become a dental hygienist usually takes two years or four years depending on the degree. Dental hygienist has to take licensure examinations to become licensed and to work in a dental office. They are required by almost all states to be graduates of commission accredited dental hygiene school or program. Dental hygienist must have a passing score on the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination which is a written exam. There are no continuing education requirements, but if you want to continue you can get a higher degree.
The average salary that a dental hygienist makes yearly is $69,208 and most dentist get paid vacation, health insurance coverage, sick leave and tuition aid for continuing education. The job outlook for a dental hygienist is going to increase 19%. There are really no advancement opportunities unless you want to advance your degree.
