The process of communication between human beings has been studied and analyzed since the beginning of time. We begin communicating the moment we are born and do not stop communicating until death. Most animals communicate with each other in some way. Dogs bark at those they see as a threat in order to communicate their hostility and in some cases the threat that they will attack if provoked. They use “body language” as well as sound and smell in order to communicate with one another. However, it is only in human that communication breaks off into different types of communication: verbal and non-verbal, formal and informal. Verbal communication is just what one would expect from the name: communication using words , and in some cases written characters .Most of us spend working hours communicating our knowledge , thoughts , and ideas with others .”Verbal communication is an act of conveying messages and ideas or feelings through the use of mouth.”(Engleberg 63). Verbal communication is the main way of communicating face to face. Among the key components of the verbal communication are words, sound, speaking and language. Through verbal communication we send “metamessages” to others. Deborah Tannen , professor of Linguistics and author of the book, ”That’s not What I meant”, explains in it what “metamessages” are. According to Tannen, conversational messages result in “metamessages”, and “metamessage” is the individual’s interpretation of how a communication was meant. Tannen offers the example of the helping message that says “ This is good for you” that sends the metamessage “I ( the speaker) am more competent than you” (32). One of her theories on the relations between men and women is how men tend to be more literal about words and women listen for metamessages. So a metamessage is an implied meaning or a heart meaning. ”Because they are more focused on involvement that is on relationships among people , and it is
