Differentiated instruction is a method of designing and delivering instruction to best reach each student. Not all students in a classroom learn a subject in the same way or share the same level of ability. It is important for the teachers to know their students well so they can provide each one with experiences and tasks that will improve learning according to their ability. As Carol Ann Tomlinson said, “Differentiation means giving students multiple options for taking in information (1999)”. Differentiation also means that you observe and understand the differences and similarities among students so that to use this information to plan instruction. Explain why teachers should adopt “differentiated instruction” in class?
Students come to school with a variety of experiences determined by their culture, pattern of socialisation, abilities or disabilities and previous education.
They are not created equally; they differ in their current skills, knowledge and competence. They are different in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, family background, language, and religion as well as differences in ability. It is believe that all children have their own abilities and strength. For example in a classroom of students in the same class, same age group is filled with learners mixed abilities, skills, prior knowledge and level of motivation.
Mixed ability refers to any person who has a different or mixed physical ability.
