The iris module describes differentiated instruction as an approach in which teachers adjust their curriculum and instructions to maximize the learning of all students (English language learners, struggling students, students with learning disabilities, and gifted and talented students). Differentiation instruction is not based off of a single strategy, rather it is comprised of a variety of strategies that teachers can used. Many of the strategies are evidence-based such as employing effective classroom management procedures, teaching to the student’s zone of proximal development, etc. Differentiated instruction is not a one-size-fits all approach, alternately it should be constructed to meet the needs of students.

Explain why each of Ms. Hasbro’s classroom practices listed below is not a differentiated practice.
2. Describe what Ms. Hasbro can do differently with each of them.
1. Delivers instruction primarily by lecturing: Delivering instruction primarily by lecture is not a differentiated practice, because differentiated practice consists of a variety of instructional approaches. Ms. Hasbro can utilize a variety of presentation styles, to such things like graphics, films, hosting discussions, thinking aloud, acting out.

Does not permit students to retake tests they have failed: Due to the fact that Ms. Hasbro does not permit students to retake tests they have failed, it does not allow for the student to demonstrate that they are able to master the content. All students do not learn at the same, for this reason Ms. Hasbro should give the students chance to demonstrate mastery without being penalized.
3. Records zeros for missing assignments: Instead of recording a zero for a missing assignment MS. Hasbro can assign a grade that indicates that the student is not proficient in a given topic (e.g., 50% or 60%). This will reduce the skewing of the students overall
