The Marks & Spencer Head Office in London employs around 3,000 people. These employees have specialist roles within the organisation. There are the buyers of stock, people involved in managing stock and its layout within stores, and staff working in marketing or accounts. The changes within Marks & Spencer have created a business that now has a flatter organisation structure. More than 60,000 employees work in the Marks & Spencer stores, many in management roles where they lead and motivate a team of people. The company also has many franchise outlets overseas. These employees also have training needs.
Verbal communication
Mark and Spencer as an organisation needs to use other types of communication to make sure the business are running in the right way. They can use a verbal communication which means they use a voice to communicate to each other. They are changing of words with the individual or the groups. They can use this type of communication to inform other people about something. One of the examples is when the manager is setting the goals to the employees. The manager can set up a meeting with the employees and use a verbal communication to inform them for example about the new product. Also the manager can use a verbal communication to update knowledge with his employees, for example to teach them about a new training programme. Interview is another form of external verbal communication is an interview with someone from outside the business of Mark and Spencer who may be interested in the business e.g. press, radio, or television. Part of the public relation strategy is that in such circumstance is to build up a positive perception and image of the business. Interview may also be taken place to recruit new staff for the business.
Written communication
Mark and Spencer also need to use a written type of communication. Written communication is any type of communication that makes use of the written words. Marks and Spencer use other types of written communication to pass the information with internal and external people. A memorandum is used within Marks and Spencer for many communication purposes, for example, to inform employees of the appointment of a new member of Letters are generally used to communicate with people and organisations outside of the business. Marks and Spencer may write to its customers announcing a new product or to answer for a complaint letter. Marks and Spencer are required by law to publish financial details in their annual report. Advertisements in magazines and newspapers are further examples of written communication. They use adverts in magazines to inform and attract their customers. Emails often contain attachments that include written communications. These can be lengthy documents, such as the records from recent meetings. They use this type of communication because it is a professional and formal way of communication.
On-screen communication
On- screen type of communication is the only one type of communication which you cannot print off. On- screen is used for TV adverts or billboards because they are colourful, fast flashing, eyes catching. They are very useful to advertising products which the business is providing. Also they are helpful to get people attention. Marks and Spencer use a TV advert because it is very useful type of communication with their customers. By making a advert in the TV they can get attention of larger group of people in all over UK or even on the different countries. It is very quickly type of communication and very often very successful.
Multi-media communication
Multimedia communication refers to communication through media devices such as phones or computers. It may include text, spoken audio, music, images, animation and video. Marks and Spencer use this type of communication when they have a conference with other business managers if they are in the different city or country. It is very useful because it safe their time and money. They can have one conference even they are not in the same place. The purpose of using this type of communication is also that they communicate to each other, ask questions and they can see reactions of other members of staff who is on the conference.
Web based communication
Web based communication is used to share information over internet. This type of communication is very useful because you do not have to use a paper and everyone has an access to use it. By the website you can inform your customers about your sales promotion, where is your business located or have your customers can contact you. Also your customers will find information about what products your business provides. Marks and Spencer have their own website where they can update their business knowledge and inform their customers about sales promotion. Marks and Spencer’s website is creating to inform their customers about everything what they need to know. Marks and Spencer’s customer find the website very useful because they can find much information about the business for example what products they provide. Also their customers can order some product online or they can find where the closer store around their area is.
Summarize, communication is a very important skill using in Marks and Spencer. Every type of communication is very useful for this organisation because they need to communicate to each other to make sure the business is running well. If the manager will not communicate with the members of staff then they will not know what their job roles are. The manager need to make sure that the staff is up to date with the product knowledge, otherwise they will not able to provide good customer service. That is why the verbal communication is very important in the business. The organisation need to make sure they are professional and they are using formal ways to communicate with external or internal people. If the organization is using letter to apologize about the complaint then they show the respect by communicating with them in the formal way. Also it is very useful to write a memo to the members of staff to inform them, for example about a staff meeting to update the knowledge. Written type of communication is very helpful because it is simple way of communication with important details. Why it is better to use a written type of communication than verbal to inform your staff about the meeting? It is because you will safe your time if you write a memo and sent one text to every member of staff. By using verbal communication you will have to spend more time to inform everyone and it is difficult to make sure you pass the message to every member of staff. On- screen and multi-media types of communication are very helpful for big companies because they can use many ways to promote their product for large amount of recipients. This type of communication is not available for every business because it is very expensive. Web based type of communication is a very helpful for large companies who need to communicate with each other even they are in different cities or countries. This gives them the opportunity to fast and effective communication as well as the opportunity to save time and money.
