'Divergent' By Veronica Roth
The book “Divergent” by Veronica Roth is a great book full of action and adventure. This book takes place in a futuristic version of Chicago. In this version of Chicago there are five different factions that you must choose from. Amity is friendship or peace, Abnegation is selflessness, Dauntless is fearlessness, Candor is honesty, and Erudite is intelligence. You have to pick a faction to live in and if you don’t you will become factionless. When going to pick her faction Tris, one of the main characters, discovers that she is Divergent. Divergent is when you don’t fit into one faction. Nobody can know that you are Divergent. They consider Divergent to be dangerous. Because she is Divergent she chooses Dauntless. The characterization, conflict, and the foreshadowing leading to the main conflict makes this story interesting. The main character of the story is Tris. Tris develops into a very strong person. Four, one of the Dauntless leaders, tells Tris that being Dauntless does not mean being fearless. “But becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that’s the point.” Choosing Dauntless was a brave choice for Tris. She …show more content…
She would go to Dauntless while they were in their fearlandsapes and watch to see if they were divergent. The day before the Dauntless leaders were going to observe the dauntless transfers in their fear landscapes, Four showed Tris that Dauntless had gotten a shipment of serms. They were from Erudite. He was trying to figure out what the serum is and what it was going to be used for. Eric, is the main leader of Dauntless, claimed that it’s a tracking device. “This will inject you with a tracking device that will be activated only if you are reported missing. Just a precaution.” He injects almost all the Dauntless with the serum. The Dauntless that were not injected were on Jeanine’s side of the

Tris’s eyes flickered to the other girl. She was beautiful in a cold kind of way. Her ice blue eyes shone from under pitch-black hair that fell to her waist. Dressed in a black leather jacket and tight black leggings, she looked like she was born to be Dauntless. The injured girl found her eyes going straight back to Tobias. She couldn’t make sense of what was going on. Her pain-addled mind couldn’t keep up with the events that were playing…

The importance of being Divergent is first introduced to Beatrice after she completes her Aptitude Test (which determines which faction a person should choose). Tori (the test manager) reports to her: “’My conclusion,’ she explains, ‘is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. People who get this result are…’ She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. ‘… are called … Divergent.’ She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. She walks around the side of the chair and leans in close to me. ‘Beatrice,’ she says, ‘under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important.’” The manner in which Tori says that Tris is a Divergent means that it is an extremely rare condition that changes the way people look at them, and this is meant that Tris would have to create her identity alone. Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless (selflessness and bravery respectively), it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four. After he and Tris exit the fear simulation room, he says: “’I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your…
