In the novel The Odyssey by Homer, the “bright-eyed” goddess Athena acts as a mentor to Odysseus when he undertakes a long journey back home; and his family when helping them cope with his absence. She guides and protects them in difficult situations, usually in different forms other than her true self, and gives knowledge or “good looks” to them when needed. To Telemachus, she most often appears as a man called Mentor, giving him advice, indicating to the reader that she truly is a mentor to the family.
A mentor helps the hero in other stories besides The Odyssey. In the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, an orphan boy, being cared for by his grumpy and cruel aunt and uncle, learns he is a wizard on his eleventh birthday. He faces many adventures when at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including a loose troll, a dangerous forest, and many obstacles trying to receive the Sorcerer’s Stone, along with his new friends Ron and Hermione.
