Although she was taught to be selfless, she found it difficult to always put others before herself. Growing up in Abnegation, Tris struggled with her identity. In general, from finding out she is divergent to joining Dauntless to the death of her parents, her identity changed significantly throughout the novel. Given these points, she was confused about her aptitude test results, uncertain of who to trust. Later, she learned more about divergence and discovered that no matter how hard she tries, she will never truly fit in any of the factions. "I am no longer Tris the selfless, or Tris the brave," she had said at the end of the novel, meaning that she will be more than …show more content…
In the choosing ceremony, she chose to train along the Dauntless, those who value courage and bravery above all else-refusing to live in a world where people value the needs of others above the needs of oneself. She changed her name to "Tris", which is the beginning of her new identity. In Dauntless, she got a tattoo of three crows, representing each member of her family, she tattooed the symbol of Abnegation and Dauntless to remind her that selflessness and bravery are not all that different. Tris's bravery even outranks some of the Dauntless members through her actions, she jumped first when no one else dared, she courageously climbed the Ferris wheel when her teammates were arguing, and she bravely risked her life to save others from the serum. Tris disagreed with Dauntless rules and lived by her own: I believe in the ordinary act of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another. Not only that, Tris also changed due to all the death around her. Tris feels responsible for the death of Al, Will, and her parents. "Something changed when they shot my mom, when they took

Tris’s eyes flickered to the other girl. She was beautiful in a cold kind of way. Her ice blue eyes shone from under pitch-black hair that fell to her waist. Dressed in a black leather jacket and tight black leggings, she looked like she was born to be Dauntless. The injured girl found her eyes going straight back to Tobias. She couldn’t make sense of what was going on. Her pain-addled mind couldn’t keep up with the events that were playing…

If Tris was truly meant to be in Abnegation, she would have let her blood drip onto the stones instead of the coals. Choosing Abnegation would have been selfless because she is doing it for her parents, who had already lost one child, but instead, she chooses her own needs before theirs. This is why, when she lets the blood drip onto the coals, she thinks “I am selfish. I am brave” (Roth 47). This shows that Tris does belong in Dauntless and not in Abnegation, because it takes bravery to go against her family like that, and it was not a selfless act to choose another faction over her own. She proves her bravery in other ways, by jumping out of the train, and by climbing the Ferris wheel, which is a feat that even Four is afraid of. Tris has never known any life other than Abnegation, and she has never been taught about the Dauntless way of life, yet she still manages to do all these brave feats without the help or encouragement of her family or friends. When Tris hops onto the train as soon as she chooses Dauntless in the choosing ceremony, she is worried about the choice that she made. She worries that she will not fit in with the others. That is why she decides to jump first into the Dauntless headquarters. Before she jumps, she thinks “I am proud. It will get me into trouble someday, but today it makes me brave” (Roth 57). This shows that even though she was hesitating about jumping into the pit, her bravery helped her to pull through, and it helped to give her the courage to be the first one to jump. Tris has been debating what faction she should pick in the choosing ceremony, and her willingness to jump into the pit proves that she made the right decision, because only a member of Dauntless would want to jump into the pit, and a member of Abnegation would never have even made it off of the train. A member of Abnegation would never be able to survive…

However, she is incredibly brave and as it later turns out, she is even more courageous than any other person from the faction. Although Tris already chose the faction, Dauntless has its own rights and the final decision whether newcomers can stay depends on the results of the test in which novices have to participate in order to prove that they have all the features of the fearless ones. Dauntless does not care about gender consequently both females and males must participate in the same death-defying challenges. Tris's beginnings in the new factions are quite good since she is the first one who dares to jump into a hole which seems to be bottomless. Nevertheless, she is a figure of fun for the rest as hardly anyone from Abnegation, which is thought to be a weak faction, joins Dauntless.…
