Divergent By Veronica Roth
Sometimes in life people are faced with difficult decisions and no one to help them make their choice. That is the situation that Tris is put in at the beginning of Divergent by Veronica Roth. She is forced to decide which group she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Once she decides, she can not back out. After she makes the choice, her life is changed forever. In this journal, I will be visualizing, evaluating, and predicting.
First I will be visualizing the scene where they have to make their decisions. It is described as a circle of people from all five of the different houses and in the middle there are five bowls. Each bowl is filled with a substance to represent one of the houses: “I will cut into my hand and sprinkle my blood into the faction I choose” (Roth 1). When the man in charge calls her name she needs to walk to the middle of the group. The man will present her with a knife. She then needs to cut open her hand and hold it over the bowl of the group that she chooses. I imagine this being a very intimidating environment. It would be very scary to have to make the decision of your life surrounded by older people. This scene would add a lot of pressure to the choice. The second reading strategy I will be using will be evaluating.

Did Tris make the correct choice in choosing the Dauntless house. She grew up in a different house, but when it became time for her to make her choice she had a situation. She was raised as a Abnegation but did not agree with some parts of their culture. The Abnegation people are known as extremely selfless. They also do not do anything dangerous or exciting. Tris knows that she wants to do exciting things in her life. She wants to live life on the edge not in boring patterns: “I am selfish, I am brave”(Roth 47). She decides to go to the Dauntless house and I think she made the right choice. She needs to follow her dreams, not what her family wants. This leads into my

Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.…

Being Divergent is a fatal existence that a person is born with but doesn’t know until they are sixteen and take an aptitude test and have a result for two factions instead of one that decides their future. As for Tris, her Divergence is special because she received an aptitude for three factions, making her a target for the Erudite faction leader Jeanine Mathews to formulate the right serum, “I have determined that you are one of the strongest Divergent… If I am to develop a simulation that [isn’t] thwarted by the Divergent mind, I must study the strongest” (Roth 328). Being Divergent is a dangerous thing to be also because it makes them have a larger orbitofrontal cortex making them risk their lives with selfless acts, “Yet she is extremely good at directing her thoughts and actions toward her goals. This explains her tendency toward harmful-but-selfless behavior and, perhaps, her ability to wriggle out of simulations” (Roth 335). These experiences that Tris went through demonstrate that being Divergent is a powerful ability, but also a dangerous one. Although being Divergent is dangerous, it can also help the person in simulations. Instead of being controlled by a simulation, people that are Divergent are able to wake up from it and change it to where they aren't affected by it, "All I know is that I'm always aware during simulations, and…

At the beginning of the novel, when Trina was introduced, Norris did not really hint at or foreshadow her excessive stinginess, which was expressed more towards the middle and end. Trina’s first introduction was simply as the cousin of Marcus, which really implied nothing about her character (13). However, upon the departure of Trina’s family after marrying McTeague, as well as after her winning of the lottery with a prize of five thousand dollars, her miserliness all of a sudden exploded as she attempted to make up the missing love of her family with the love of money. When Trina married McTeague, she was left in a vulnerable position, all alone. She even acknowledges her aloneness when she says, “…you must be good to me – for you’re all that I have in the world now” (142). Norris showed Trina’s stinginess was a result of genetics and heredity as he explained that “A good deal of peasant blood still ran undiluted in her veins, and she had all the instinct of a hardy and penurious mountain race – the instinct which saves without thought…saving for the sake of saving” (134).…
