Do you agree with the view that the 1950s can be seen as a period of great prosperity for the people of Britain? Explain your answers using Sources 1, 2 and 3 and your own knowledge. (40 marks)

In my opinion, the 1950s cannot be seen as a period of prosperity for the people of Britain for a number of reasons which I will explain further on. I believe that source 1 mainly agrees with the above statement, however, there are some areas in the source which can display ways in which the source doesn’t fully agree with the above statements. Source 2 also, somewhat agrees with the above question, however, there are a greater number of aspects of the question which can imply that the statement is not 100% true. Source 3 is the source which mostly disagrees with the above question for a number of reasons.

I believe that the 1950s were not years of great prosperity for the people in Britain for a number of reasons. Firstly, although source 1 states that the British people ‘have never had it so good’ it can be interpreted that this account could be considered as being somewhat biased as it is a speech made by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in July 1957 during a Conservative Party rally in Bedford which means that all that is said in the rally is to ensure that all the supporters of the party are pleased with the progress that is being made. As it is a speech made at the rally of the party that implemented policies in order for this situation to happen they would only discuss the positives of their policies and only talk about the benefits it has for people, it would not discuss the limitations or the negative impact it may have had on the lives of some. The use of the word ‘most’ in the starting of the speech clearly shows that not everyone benefited from the policies he had out in place, in fact some people were left in a much worse condition as they were not able to enjoy all the benefits the majority of the

Opportunities was a big success for the 1950s. Jobs were all around and had free jobs for everybody. “ America in the 1950s was still considered to be a land of opportunity and the economy was growing like crazy. During that time period, just about anyone that wanted to get a job could find a job and the U.S. middle class expanded rapidly. Now day the opportunities of opening jobs are less and the minimum wage is less than anybody that could afford an apartment.…

Labour weakness was the most important reason for Conservative dominance from 1951 to 1964. How far do you agree? Between 1951 and 1964, the Conservative's time in power, the Labour party were providing ineffectual opposition. One of the reasons for this was their internal disputes over issues such as unilateralism. However, there were also more important reasons for Conservative dominance, such as the economy and growing prosperity in Britain, the property owning democracy and the greater availability of credit, modern conveiniences and luxury items. Prosperity during this time was growing, and people were in general wealthier than they had been before. A reason for this could have been the manipulation of the economy by the Conservatives; their stop-and-go stagflation lowered and rose taxes in accordance to the election date in order to gain more votes. Though they had no real long-term economic plan and their wily manipulation was often criticised, it did help them to gain votes. The wages also rose during this time meaning people were able to more freely afford luxury items and other things such as mortgages, which links to the property owning democracy.…

    13 wasted years

In regards to the economy, there can be seen to have been some notable successes, indicating the years may not have been entirely wasted. The country had been transformed from the austerity of the previous Labour government to one of growing prosperity. Britain enjoyed high interest rates, low inflation, cheap readily available goods and full employment so much so that Prime Minister declared in 1957 that Britons had “never had it so good”. The people had access to good which had never been available previously, and the 1959 election was dubbed the “washing machine election” because of this. This is certainly a period somewhat unique as unlike the 70s and 80s, Britain did not experience a recession. Therefore it can be argued that the 13 years were not wasted in regards to the economy, as successive Tory governments managed to keep the economy healthy. However, although on the surface the economic situation looked promising, in reality the 13 years of Tory rule were unable to stem Britain’s relative economic decline. Chancellors across this period often employ a system of “stop-go” economics whereby the economy is tinkered with strategically in order to make political gains. This occurred in 1959 when Chancellor Butler gave tax cuts of £134 million to the middle classes just in time for the election. Although this was politically successful it was not wise, as after the boom came the inevitable bust, leaving the economy weakened. In addition, the Conservatives governments continued the post-war policy of appeasing the trade unions. For instance: when Macmillan was faced with striking railwaymen, he increased their pay by 5% instead of the recommended 3%. This avoided confrontation but was economically unsustainable, as seen by the strikes in the 60s and 70s. There was a trend of difficult decision being avoided. Operation ROBOT, a plan to restructure industry, was cancelled by Churchill, and industrial stagnation continued. Also notable is Macmillan’s refusal to…
