At some points, because of Hugh's lame leg, Hugh couldn't walk as fast as the others and never did he ask them to slow down. Also, when Hugh found the missing pages to the book of the Seynt of Graal Brother John made him work for 2 hours straight while the other monks were eating dinner, but Hugh didn’t complain once. Dickon told Hugh that he shouldn't wast his time on finding and fixing the missing pages from the book of Seynt of Graal. However, Hugh knew that the pages were not only important for finding the Holy Grail, but also because the book needed to be completed. On his way to visit Master…
In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the author illustrates the thematic tension of expectation versus reality ultimately favoring reality. In this story the narrator, Brother, and Doodle, his crippled-broken down-little brother, faces the dilemma of Doodle being disabled-- unable to walk, or do anything by himself-- and he finds himself in a mess of whether or not he wants to learn to become “normal.” From the beginning everybody, except Aunt Nicey, believes that Doodle is a goner. Daddy had even built Doodle a mahogany coffin, which would rest in the barn until the day came, that Doodle would die. But, Brother is determined to teach Doodle how to walk, and become a “normal” little brother. However, in the process all Brother…
“I'm so blessed. The challenges of my past have made me immensely strong inside. I adapted quickly, learning how to survive from a bad situation.I learned the secret of internal motivation. My experience gave me a different outlook on life, that others may never know”, page 86. This quote opens up a whole new meaning compared to the rest of the book. It shows a drastic change on giving up from before to being fortunate to being a whole new person again. From having no one to hold his hand throughout the years, Stephen his son, having him maintain his dignity and wiping away his tears. Nothing is more better to Dave than knowing that he had finally let go of what was no longer good to him on his mental and physical health. Learning is a big…
She rides her bike up a hill again and again before giving up and walking ;she and her father drive in circles in silence, pretending neither notices that the scenery is no longer new. These scenes cut straight to the point and expand emotionally upon the literal truth of being stuck in a world of repetition with no prospect for escape. But these sorts of sustained, reoccurring passages are easily lost in what become longer and longer stretches of predictable and facile sequences that gain the reader no new insights and no new developments.…

Many themes can be found in the novel A Long Walk To Water. Responsibility, love, and family are of those many themes, but the one that each of these connects to is perseverance. The definition of perseverance is ‘‘steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.’’ Since many others found this main theme I have decided instead of talking about Salva the obvious example of perseverance, I will be talking about some of the other characters in the book that you may not notice but are always working towards a bigger goal.…

Determination, strength, hope, endurance, perseverance, and love are only a few words to describe the readers feelings while reading this story. The author, Eudora Welty, screams-silently through her gently placed words in story, “A Worn Path”. The inspiring and encouraging phrases spoken to someone, “never give up”, “keep fighting”, “never back down”, are the unspoken feeling through the characters perseverance, determination, and love. The tone in the story is displayed through life of a black, negro-woman, who faces daily obstacles, during a time when black Americans were treated unjustly and unfairly. The traveled path she is traveling parallels the obstacles that African Americans experienced while on their journey for racial equality.…

Santiago refuses to “admit he was suffering at all” , but like Rudy he refuses to let that stop him from trying the biggest fish he has ever seen.(Hemingway…
Repetition is also a strangely used figure in this story. At times, the same sentence can essentially be used for almost an entire page. The purpose for such extensive repetition could be a number of things, like emphasis of a certain action or thought. It could also be to give the reader the same feeling that the character is facing when it comes to walking what seems like forever through a dark forest, repeating the same dreary sentence referring to how dark and endless it seems continually for half of a page can in turn create a longing for sunlight in the reader.…
