Dr. Ben Carson: A Modern Day Hero
Dr. Ben Carson’s a hero in my eyes. He has an amazing life story that not very many people have. He overcame hardships and struggle that people of this generation have not thought of. He worked hard on what he wanted, and he accomplished it. He made the most of what he wanted. He even wrote books and made a movie about his life! Now that’s an accomplishment not very many people has. Dr. Ben Carson should be considered a modern day hero. First, Dr. Ben Carson was considered a modern day hero because he overcame adversity. For example, Dr. Ben Carson overcame adversity because he had a single mother who did not know how to read, yet she pushed him into achieving excellent grades and he became the best pediatric neurosurgeon in the nation. An article indicates, “ With only a third grade education herself, Sonya Carson prayed diligently for wisdom to help Ben and his older brother Curtis to succeed in school” (“Carson” Internet). Having a single mother is hard on children because they did not have as much support as children with two parents. Sonya Carson helped Ben and Curtis as much as she could because she did not want to be the typical single mother. Even though she could not read, Sonya strived for the …show more content…
Carson is considered a modern day hero because he’s inspiring. For instance, Dr. Ben Carson is inspiring because he likes giving back to the community. According to an article written by Crystal Kimpson Roberts, “Ben Carson shows his blessings through the Carson Scholar’s Fund, which he created after getting tired of seeing athletes get better recognition than academically gifted students” (“Roberts” Internet). Ben Carson was getting sick of seeing all the athletes get better scholarships than the kids who work hard academically and do not receive the same recognition . He wanted to give back to the kids and the community by making a fund for the kids who are excellent academically. He thought if he did that, he would make more of a

As mentioned Amy Purdy is the best example of a true hero because of the ordeal she faced and the way she was able to overcome it. People read and watch things about heroes all the time because in the deepest reaches of their mind they aspire to be among their ranks. The problem with the average person’s desire to be a hero is that they don’t truly know what a hero is. A hero is able to bounce back from a defeat that would stop any normal man in their tracks, they are inspirational, they gain followers and believers just by doing what they think is right, and they don’t have to be strong, but have to be able to take mental punishment like no other.…

What comes to mind when envisioning the aspects of a hero? An innovator? A fearless fighter? While those elements can be true, loyal, dauntless and determined are more suitable to describe Norman Bethune. This Canadian doctor was born in Gravenhurst Ontario. He was idolized by citizens all over the country for his dedication and endless commitment towards his patients. During the Spanish Civil War, nearly 2000 Canadians travelled to Spain to fight for the Republic, and as a result, almost half didn’t return to their families back home. Bethune did his absolute best to try and help the soldiers recover faster, so they could continue fighting for the country. Norman attempted multiple inexperienced, unusual, and unique medical techniques on his patients to efficiently restore their health. Norman Bethune is an inspiring role model towards Canadians because of his astounding assistance in multiple wars, his unique surgical techniques, and…

Upon hearing that this topic was about heroes, my mind became flooded with ideas and concepts. Family members, historical figures and celebrities had all come to mind. However, this person was the first name that came to mind. This man, depending on your prospective, is either a hero or a villain. To many, he and his qualities are basically the definition of a hero. He has a no-quit attitude, a passion, and a fire in his heart. He has the heart and soul of a true warrior and champion. He has never run, he has fought through the down times, the lows, to achieve greatness, and reach those highs, those great moments. This man is a rare find in this world, nobody will ever be like him. He has a killer instinct, or “Mamba Mentality”, and that is…

There’s an old saying by Eleanor Roosevelt that states “You can never really live anyone else's life, not even your child's. The influence you exert is through your own life, and what you've become yourself.” I believe this statement is true. However, what Eleanor Roosevelt fails to mention was who, or what kind of people come into our lives and influence us to change for the better. Do these particular individuals shape our paths, or our futures? Or when these people come into our lives is it meant to happen for a reason? No one knows for sure, but when we meet someone who leaves such a profound effect on our hearts and minds, like foot prints in the sand we remember them forever. Ben Carson always mentions that his mother helped shaped his life, as well as his family, students, teachers, his strong belief in god, and his love for books helped shaped his future. Throughout middle school, high school and college these key influences would lead him to what he has become today.…

While there are many heroes in the US who are recognized for something they did for themselves, there are some unspoken heroes who should be recognized for their actions for others, for example, Sheldon Smith. Sheldon was an African American child who grew up without a father figure in his life, and who, at the age of 17, was sent to jail for robbery. While this may seem bad, it was the turning point in his life. "It was horrible. It scared me straight. It woke me up and saved me. I haven't been in trouble since." He said in CNN’s article about him, Breaking the cycle of absentee fathers And with this life turning point, Sheldon started paying attention to his community. He learned that nearly half of the African American children grow up without a good…
