In my placement I had an experience with a girl that she doesn’t get along with her sister. She talked to me and told me that her sister tries to get her and her mother arguing and how always wants to get her way. She is frustrated for her sister’s behavior and disappointed how much they don’t get along.
Effective in communication when having a one-to one interaction is when there is a conversation between two persons who both understands one another. To be done we have to practice certain attitude. First we have to choose the right atmosphere where the conversation is going to take place. It is more effective when the place/room have enough light, worm and not too small or big. When meeting the other person of the 1 to 1 conversation we help him feel comfortable, relaxed and showing positive attitude with a greeting by saying ‘Hi’ or ‘Good evening’. After that a conversation or information exchange can be started, where the client will tell you about the problem. And to finish effectively and on a positive note you say for instance ‘thanks and see you later’.
This interaction was formal because it took place in a health and care setting. I used this type of interaction because I was talking to a client and was polite and respected her and so made her feel comfortable to give me personal information.
Yes there were differences in language communication and culture because the service-user was English. She had different culture practice and had fluent English speaking and so I didn’t understand all the phrases she said and in the other hand I might have used jargons. So I made sure of checking for understanding.
I used open questions as a verbal communication where this helped her to open more about her problem. For instance I asked her ‘what your sister does to you?’ Another verbal communication I used is summarization, this helped me and the client to see if I understood the problem and what really is she going to do about it.
