Motives for up regulating negative emotions include promoting a focused , analytic mind set , fostering an empathic stance; and influencing others actions. The most forward looking approach to emotional regulation is situation selection. This type of emotion regulation involves taking actions that make it more (or less) likely that one will give rise to desirable (or undesirable) emotions. Situation modification refers to directly modifying a situation so as to alter its emotional impact.
Attentional deployment refers to directing attention with in a given situation in order to influence ones emotions. Attentional deployment is one of the first emotion regulatory processes to appear during development ( Rothbart, Ziarie, & o Boyle, 1992) and it is used from cradle to grave , particularly when it is not possible to modify one’s situation.
