In chapters 1-4, Ender is defined as a hero by his thoughts at elementary school and at home. For example, after Ender had his monitor removed, Stilson, a malicious student that went to school with Ender, brought a group of kids and started a fight with Ender; went up to him and tried to attack him for being a third. The government only allowed parents to have two kids, so having a third brought the family embarrassment, “Ender, however was trying to figure out a way to forestall vengeance… …show more content…
For example, Ender had a plan that would make Bernard, one of this launchy classmates, look like an idiot and abate his power over all the launchies, “Bernard’s attempt to be ruler of the room was now broken-only a few stayed with him now… Bernard was contained, and all the boys who had some quality were free of him. Best of all, Ender had done it without sending him to the hospital” (Card 52). To put it another way, Ender had moderately fractured Bernard’s power with the rest of the launchy group without physically hurting him. Therefore Ender helped the rest of the boys who could be someone important and improve their futures since he cared about them and how Bernard treated them. Additionally, In the battle room, the older boys were teasing Ender and his friends for trying to master difficult skills, but got mad when Shen, one of Ender’s friend, did it to them. Due to that, the older boys broke into the battle room to try and hurt them, “‘Stay there!’ He shouted at his friends, who obviously were forming up to come and rescue him… Ender grasped the shoulders of the third boy’s shirt and pulled him up sharply, butting him in the face with his helmet” (Card 115). This reveals that Ender's friends wanted to go and help him, but Ender didn't want their help and handled the situation. As a result of Ender's actions, he thought of his friends and how he didn't want them getting …show more content…
For example, Colonel Graff took Ender to command school to train and be prepared to save the world, “‘As for me,’ said Ender, ‘I’m in favor of surviving” (Card 254). To put it another way, Ender knows that the world will remain alive if he saves it. One conclusion that can be drawn from this is all heroes are depended on to save something or someone, and Ender is being depended on to save humanity. Additionally, as Ender was in command school, he had many battles to prepare him for the last battle, “Within three seconds the entire planet burst apart , becoming a sphere of bright dust, hurtling outward… ‘They were all there and you destroyed them completely. They'll never attack us again. You did it. You.’ Real. Not a game. Ender's mind was to tired to cope with it all. They weren't just points of light in the air, they were real ships he had fought with and real ships he had destroyed. And a real world that he blasted into oblivion” (Card 295-297). In other words, Ender had exploded apart a planet that he didn't even know was real until he was told the Buggers wouldn't attack again. Therefore Ender just saved humanity and it was almost like survival of the fittest; either humans would survive and kill the buggers or the buggers would survive and kill the humans. For these reasons Ender is a hero due to the fact that he saved earth when everyone depended
