Introduction: Enzymes are produced by living organisms as proteins. These enzymes perform as catalysts to bring about a chemical reaction. In fact, most reactions are catalyzed by enzymes during reactions in the cell or in the human body. A catalyst that enzymes pose ad are by definition substances that are capable of initiating or speeding up a chemical reaction. Catalyst are not a necessity during a chemical reaction, they are just used to speed up a chemical reaction. An enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide is specifically known as catalase. This chemical reaction that is most catalyzed by catalase H2O2 decomposition to form water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). This chemical reaction is represented by the formula:

The mistake made throughout this experiment was the addition of 15-mL of the 1.5% H2O2 substrate instead of the 10-mL directed. This mistake led to the chemical reaction occurring at a slower rate than it would have if the proper amount was added. The more substrate that is present, the more of the enzyme that is required, so because there was more of the H2O2 substrate present, the enzyme (catalase solution) was not as effective.
Discussion and conclusion: During this experiment, it is prevalent that when the boiled catalase was used, there was no bubbling because the catalase had been denatured. This is very significant because it proves that if the catalyst is denatured, it no longer acts like a catalyst resulting in not effecting the rate at which a chemical reaction occurs. Another observation from this experiment is that there was bubbling near or around the potato because it gave off H2O. This is also significant because it proves that this enzyme is an effect catalyst while speeding up a chemical reaction. Ultimately, it is evident throughout this experiment that the rate of the chemical reaction during H2O2 decomposition was enhanced by the enzyme
