Essay On Bilingual Language
Spanish is the language I’ve known all my life. It’s the language my family and I have used since we were able to speak. I never really questioned when other people would use a different language. I don’t even remember other people speaking a different language than me until I moved to a different elementary school. I attended pre-k through second grade at Perez Elementary. There, from I remember, all the classes where taught in Spanish, so I was never exposed to a different language. Things drastically changed when I moved to a different school in the third grade. I started the third grade at Zachary Elementary. The first day of school was one of the most agonizing days I have ever experienced. My teacher was a non-spanish speaking educator, so that proved to be a very difficult situation. Things from there started to change. Little by little I was able to learn the language. I became familiarized with the morphology and phonology of the English language. Although, syntax which is basically grammar and semantics which is the study of words were much harder to learn (Wright, 2010). I think that I will always experience a bit of trouble with the English language. It’s something that the only thing I can do, is keep learning. I think that my experience will influence my instruction in the classroom. I feel like some of the situations I went through weren’t handled the best way, and I will do whatever I can so no other children goes through the same thing. I feel like representation is important. ELL students need representation, and what better way than having in the classroom. It’s important for them to know that it’s possible to achieve your goals even if English is not their first
