Picture this scenario: an elementary class is enjoying recess out on the playground, and one child picks up a rock and throws it at a classmate. The teacher, instead of punishing the child, gives all other children a rock to defend themselves with, because the only thing that can stop a bad kid with a rock is a good kid with a rock, right?
In the United States, there are more guns than there are people. According to a Congressional Research Service report, for everyone 100 citizens there are approximately 112 guns. This ratio is greater than that of any other country. See something wrong here? If you need a reminder, the population of the US is over 300 million. There are enough guns in this country for every man, woman, and child, and then some.
But just because there’s a lot of guns doesn’t necessarily mean anything, right? If someone wants to injure or kill someone, can’t they do the same with a knife? A gun …show more content…
doesn’t just get up and kill someone on its own.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, from the years 2007-2011, 70% of homicides in the United States were committed with firearms. In comparison, in Australia, a country with stricter gun laws, only about 10% of homicides were committed with guns. In the UK, the same percentage is even less. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, since strict gun regulations were imposed after the Port Arthur shooting in Australia in 1996, which is the largest single mass shooting in history, firearm homicides and suicides committed by firearms have been steadily declining. Since these laws have come into effect, there hasn’t been a single mass shooting since Port Arthur. It is also important to note that Australia hasn’t completely outlawed guns; it has simply put stricter gun control into practice.
No one is saying to ban guns entirely.
But the one rifle we can truly do away with is the assault rifle.Do you really need an assault rifle? It literally has assault in the name. You need it for protection? From what, a band of assassins? Are people really trying to kill you every time you go outside? Most of those in favor of gun control don’t want to take away all guns from the hands of American citizens. If you want to own a handgun, a hunting rifle, or maybe a shotgun to hang above your mantle, it is your right. But do guns really need to be everywhere? Why would you need any other guns besides the ones aforementioned? Why has the United States endorsed such a strong “gun culture” throughout all of its history? And why is wanting to make this country a safe place to live such a bad thing? A generation of kids have grown up in Australia not having to live with the fear of a mass school shooting in the back of their heads; wishing the same for the future generations of the United States should not be a bad
thing.
