High School Late Start Time
Many high school students are feeling that they are not getting enough sleep. This has caused many people to question the early start times, because “For the first time, the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention is trying to get schools to have a later start time” (Richmond). Many doctors have confirmed that not getting enough sleep at night can lead to big problems such as slowed reaction time and even as far as weight gain. Research has proven, “Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and academic performance” ( qtd. in Richmond). Scientists at Brown University have come to a conclusion that, “Teens are biologically ‘wired’ to stay up late and get up late”. The mind of a teen from a mind of an adults is completely different, teens are able to stay up later and they are also able to get up later. One school in Minnesota adjusted their start time of 7:30 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. student Andrea Kemme said, “I’m so much more alert in class. It’s unbelievable. I would not change back. It’s much better to be awake”. If the school districts inforced the late start time student would have more focus and would be less likely to sleep in class. Students will also be more happy in general do to the extra sleep.
U.S. representative, Zoe Lofgren, introduced the ZZZ’s to A’s Act in March of 1999. This Act provides money to California high schools that start at 9 a.m. supporters of a late start time, have stated that, “Starting school later helps students” (Should Schools Start). The ZZZ’s to A’s Act is a good idea for schools to get more money and for the students to work with their sleep schedules. Other supporters of late start times have also said, “Late start times allow students to follow their natural sleep
