Maybe you have heard your mom calling from downstairs saying, “Honey get ready for school; you don’t want to miss the bus!” Does this sound familiar? School should start later because it is scientifically proven that teens need their sleep. First of all, kids having to get up between 6:30 and 7:00 five out of seven days of the week is completely unacceptable! According to the article “Wake Up Call”, research shows that sleep affects health, happiness, and cognitive functioning- especially among teens.” This shows that the more sleep teens get the happier and more productive they will become. Teachers would also appreciate their students to be well slept for their class because the more rested students are the better …show more content…
According to “Most Teens Start School Too Early In Morning To Get Enough Sleep” by Liz Sazbo “allowing high schoolers to sleep in could mean sending elementary kids to school in the dark during the winter, as they would have to take the early schedule. That could pose a safety dangers to the youngest kids as they walk to school or wait at bus stops, Domenech said.” While this maybe true teens are still not getting enough sleep to become good, productive students. If later start times mean later release times schools still need to start later for their students to get as much out of school as possible. Parents shouldn’t be worried about their elementary kids walking to school in the dark during the winter because that could be prevented. Their parents could drive them to school so they don’t have to worry about them walking in the dark. Later start times need to happen so that students of all ages especially teens can get as much out of school as

Teens that do not get enough sleep are much more likely to participate in violent crimes as well as property crimes than teens with good amounts of sleep. Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

If you had the choice, would you choose to sleep or go to school? Wouldn’t you want school to start later so you could get your nine hours? Well, it’s not as ideal as it seems. For the past few years, the Littleton Public Schools district, along with other school districts around the country, discussed the idea of the change of school start and end times. For the most part of this school year, the district has started to ask parents and students for their opinions and to come up with different solutions that will appeal to everyone. One of the biggest reasons that the district would need to change the times befalls the lack of sleep that students receive. Pamela McKeever, the leader of a study of adolescent sleep said that, "...research explains…

Risks of not getting the right amount of sleep could be mental issues, learning difficulty and physical problems that could impact sport and academic performances. Studies also show that with more sleep along with later start times teens show a boost in energy which could lead to students being more active during school hours and participating in events or after school activities. I think this may give students who forgot to study or do their homework a chance to work on these things in the…

High schools throughout the United States start their school day at times that are too early for students. Teenagers have a biological wake time, and when schools start early in the morning, it interferes with teens biological clock. According to a study done by Harvard Medical School, young adults need at least nine hours of sleep every night. The study also shows that the need for sleep is never greater in our lives than it is during adolescence, but yet the conflict between school and sleep is at it’s highest while teens are in high school. Many educators believe that if teens just went to bed earlier, they would…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

It is fairly difficult for teenagers to go to sleep and get up earlier due to a change in their internal sleep clocks as shown in research. Should high school classes begin later in the day and end later to accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks? I think that changing the school schedule would be a bad idea. It would make all after school activities start later and cause jobs to be delayed. Another reason is school would end around 5pm which is when there is a lot of traffic and it gets dark. The school schedule should be left alone because it would mess up everyone’s schedules.…
