Essay On Locavores
Locavores are people who have decided to eat locally grown or produced products. The more people discuss locavores, the more of a positive response people have towards it. A positive response such as supporting local farms makes the community stronger. Having the local farms closer will have a decrease in the carbon dioxide in the environment due to the transportation pollution. Local produce from farms will differ from the produce at the supermarket less contamination. Local farms have organic certifications refurbishments which are requirements that have to be met in order to sell organic produce, such as using the correct materials the USDA and knowing what type of materials to not use. Many might ask, what if our local farms are further away from our supermarket? Knowing that you are eating a better quality vegetable without certain hormones is a better outcome from eating foods in supermarkets. In [Source D] we are able to tell that wholesale/retails are causing more transportation in delivering the produce, which is causing a major impact in the climate. Also, having your produce from a local farm will create less contamination due to transportation not being involved. The more the produce is being transported around, the more of a chance contamination will occur. Also, “local food translates to more variety” due to vegetables or fruits not being able to withstand long truck trips due to not lasting until they actually reach the supermarket [Source A]. While local farms will have a larger variety of types of apples, etc. due to their transportation.
Locavores are a great way to help out with the community and help out your local farmers, knowing that your money is supporting your community. “Small farmers will be able to get up to 75% of their organic certification costs reimbursed” [Source E] this is a main reason why supporting local farms are helpful, which will allow expanded access to farmer's markets and organic produce.
