Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization founded by Margaret Sanger in 1916. Planned Parenthood began as the first birth control clinic in America (“Planned Parenthood | Official Site”). It began in Brooklyn, New York, and it was opened with Sanger, her sister, and a friend (“Planned Parenthood | Official Site”). Sanger’s original missions for Planned Parenthood were, providing contraception and other health services to women and men, funding research on birth control and educating specialists and the public about the results, and advancing access to family planning in the United States and around the world (“Planned Parenthood | Official Site”). Planned Parenthood has always seen people opposing it, from the very beginning when police raided the clinic, and Sanger, her sister and her friend were arrested, to now with Republicans and “pro-life” activists trying to defund and bring an end to the organization (“Planned Parenthood | Official Site”). Planned Parenthood is not the monster that republicans and “pro-life” activists make it out to be, contrary to what they may think
Over the years many Planned Parenthood clinics have seen an increase in men patients. For example, in the Rocky Mountain region between the years of 2007 and 2008 they saw an increase of male clients by 22% at their clinics (Gillentine). Planned Parenthood offers many services that men can benefit from such as colon and testicular cancer screenings and STD tests, as well general health care. Overall, a total of 6% of all Planned Parenthood patients are men, this may seem like a small amount, but with Planned Parenthood reaching about 4,665,000 people a year, that is about 280,000 men (Gillentine, “Planned Parenthood | Official Site”). This just goes to show that so many men, women, and young people benefit from Planned Parenthood each year; Planned Parenthood is not failing or slowing
