Essay On Speech Language Pathology
After I received my B.A. in Speech Language Pathology, I decided to take a year off from my studies. I felt the need for rest and refresh myself in the non-academic world before continuing on to graduate school. Fortunately I was able to secure a position working with severely autistic children as an Applied Behavioral Analysis instructor. Not only has this position enabled me to make use of my undergraduate training, but I was also exposed related professions that I had been unaware of. While there are many aspects of Speech Pathology that I’ve enjoyed using, I discovered (much to my surprise) that there are other aspects of my position that I enjoy even more. This has caused me to rethink my original plan to pursue an master’s degree in …show more content…
I do not want to settle for and work a job that I will eventually grow to hate. I do know that I definitely want to be involved in health care in some capacity. One of my co-workers, who is currently pursuing her MPH at GW, has been encouraging me for several months to look into GW’s public health programs. I did not consider taking her advice until months later, when I had the opportunity to eat dinner with a woman who shared some amazing stories about working with non-profit organizations and traveling around the world. She has been doing a lot of research on infectious diseases and nutrition in the developing world and has been developing nutrition and treatment programs. It seemed like really meaningful and rewarding work. When I asked her how she got into the career, she said she had an MPH. She also put me in contact with two of her friends who also work in public health. One has worked as a project manager. The other is a policy analyst on Capitol Hill. I really could picture myself doing this as a career because it involves identifying needs and problem solving - which is something that I do feel drawn

Since I was initially a nursing student when I entered college, I had never considered becoming a teacher. Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted a career where I could serve others, and I always believed that being a nurse would allow me to achieve this goal. Still, I fell in love with the education field the moment I started volunteering and aiding in my aunt's classrooms, which they taught grades TK– 4. I immediately changed my major because it makes me feel extremely fortunate to think that one day I would be able to teach, laugh, and help my kids in the same manner that my aunts do. To begin with, I worked as a student intern, as a tutor for the Advancement Via Individual Determination program for four years.…

Health Care Administration is a profession I found myself drawn to. Early in my career I believed I wanted to be an attorney. As I entered college and began doing research, working with an attorney, I found that I had a knack for research and talking with people so I became a paralegal. When I graduated in 1999 as a paralegal, I fell on hard times, had children, but I did a lot of freelance work for different attorneys in the area. At this point, health care was not something I was looking to as a profession. In 2001, I came across a health care professional and after talking with her she said how she sees the potential within me to be in health care. At this point I was offered a job as a secretary within the infectious disease department at one of the major hospitals in Mississippi. This job started my 10 year journey to the introduction of my career in health care. As years went on, I realized that my calling is health care but I was confused as to what I actually wanted to do. In 2007, I entered and was accepted into the LPN program. I made it all the way to the last semester and I realized that health care administration was the key for me. Upon my more research I found University of Phoenix Health Care Administration Program and I have loved it from day one.…

As a child growing up, I have seen aunts; uncles and cousin pursue a career in the medical field. So as I got older I wanted a career in the medical field too, but as a registered nurse (RN). I love watching TV shows on people who was there to help others in the time of sickness or an emergency and I can see myself doing that because I like to help others. I even started a local community college and took classes towards the nursing program; I got pregnant and did not go back to college. Until now, choosing a career in the medical billing and coding showed me that it is less school, can earn a certificate or associates degree, how much a person can earn for a living through a year, how you can work in a building or work from the comfort of your home.…

I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. With age I have learned helping others…

My ideal job is being a pediatrician. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “General pediatricians provide care for infants, children, teenagers, and young adults. They specialize in diagnosing and treating problems specific to younger people. Most pediatricians treat common illnesses, minor injuries, and infectious diseases, and administer vaccinations. Some pediatricians specialize in pediatric surgery or serious medical conditions that commonly affect younger patients, such as autoimmune disorders or chronic ailments”. All my life, I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor. When I transferred to Queens College in Fall 2015, I was a dual major in elementary education and psychology. It was at Queens College that I realized I had a strong interest in the psychology field and learning about disorders and various treatments available. I took an intro to clinical psychology course in the Fall 2016 semester, and I enjoyed having practice exercises, helping and treating a "client". I am currently taking Psychological Disorders of Childhood, and am learning about various assessments and treatments targeted for children. My education courses were also beneficial because I got to volunteer in the classroom and I got to see the issues students were really facing. It was a great precursor of what is to come in the counseling…
