Eternal Optimist
THE ETERNAL OPTIMIST
My name is Sadie and I am an eternal optimist. What is an optimistic person? Well, in this essay I will not only explain what an optimistic person may be, but also why I consider myself one, and examples of me as an optimist.

First of all, let’s define what an optimist is. A person disposed to take a desirable view of things. The word is originally derived from the Latin prefix optimum meaning “best.” In addition, optimists always hope for a favorable, positive outcome in any situation. Optimistic people tend to live a longer, healthier life rather than a pessimist. So I believe that being optimistic is not a choice, but a lifestyle.

Secondly, I consider myself optimistic because I always find a positive angle in a negative situation. Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile, a world of optimism, and hope. A ‘you can do it,’ when things are tough attitude. I may not be able to save the world, but it is the positive little things that can really turn myself or somebody else’s day from poor to superior.

Furthermore, my friends have always said that I seem very happy no matter the situation at hand. Recently I lost my wallet and on the way to the bank I ran out of gas on the side of the road. There was not a gas station or any building for that matter, in site. Instead of getting all worked up and being the typical pessimist, I called a friend for help. We laughed at the situation, found a solution, and moved on. In conclusion, being optimistic makes the simple things in life a lot easier.

In the end, I have defined, explained, and given examples to support why I am an eternal optimist. Being optimistic has allowed me to enjoy life more, and given me many advantages, mentally and physically. After reading this paper, there should be no question what an optimist is, and why I enjoy being one.

My brother, Ramez, is the definition of the word optimist. An optimist is a person who holds the belief that good ultimately outweighs evil in the world. Firstly, Ramez attempts to look at every situation on the brighter rather than the darker side. If he were to be robbed, he would say something along the lines of “at least I was not killed”. If one were to be completely failing at a hobby, assignment, career choice or having a mid-life crisis, Ramez would find a way to make it appear as if it is not the worst thing to happen and that a positive artifact has somehow come out of the negative situation. Now, this is a moderately beneficial characteristic to have in a person, for optimists will always be able to bring ones and their selves’ spirits…

Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…

In life, one can look at life two ways. One can be an optimist, a person who has a positive outlook on life and no matter what is going on one always-thinks positive. However, a pessimist is the pole opposite of an optimist. A pessimist is a person who has a negative outlook of life and always thinks of the negative in any situation. A great example of an optimist and pessimist view is in Voltaire’s Candide, tells the story of Candide an illegitimate nephew of a German baron. He lives and grows up at a baron’s castle. His teacher Pangloss teaches him. Pangloss teaches hint that this world is “the best of all possible worlds”. Candide falls in love with the barons beautiful and young daughter named Cunégonde. According to Daniel Gilbert there are “fundamental assumptions namely, that we humans understand what we want and are adept at improving our well-being that we are good at maximizing our utility, in the jargon of traditional economics” (Gertner 1). Daniel Gilbert is describing what affective forecasting is. Affective forecasting means that we cannot predict what we want. According the Arthur C. Brooks “happiness is a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which if you will sit down quietly may alight upon you” (1). This means that if we tryto make out lives perfect we will almost always mess up. People think that we always have to go out in the world to find what will make us happy but, sometimes we have to let life take its course in order to find…

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information” (Positive Thinking). Being optimistic is absolutely mental. The Mayo Clinic shares the most effective ways to becoming optimistic, “If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way” (Positive thinking). In order to stay positive the person needs to know they can get over the challenges, “One fundamental attitude is to presume that all problems can be solved and we possess in us the ability to solve the problem in hand. Adopting such an attitude, we would explore all resources and go the extra mile to get things done” (Yew). It is possible to stay positive when conditions are not running…
