Ethos In A Restaurant Business
Ethos is one of the three rhetorical appeals, alongside pathos and logos. Ethos is best defined as “the character or reputation of a rhetor” ( ). By character we are referring to the reputation, moral strength, and personality of the rhetor. When we appeal to ethos, we create an image of ourselves that is credible so that our audience will listen and hopefully agree with what we have to say. It refers to the character, appearance, and credibility of whom a message is coming from. There are two types of ethical proofs: invented (intrinsic) ethos and situated (extrinsic) ethos. Invented ethos is when a rhetor invents a character appropriate for the given situation. Thus, and intrinsic proof is created in a rhetorical situation. For example, I …show more content…
A similar example would be applying for a job at a restaurant. In the restaurant business, you may want to create an ethos by listing previous high-end restaurants you worked at with some references. Situated ethos is ethos you already own; it’s the credible reputation you possess in your community. For example, a doctor is not only seen credible at the hospital, but also in his/her social circle or community as well. Another example would be asking an English professor a question on rhetoric. The professor’s ethos is strong not only because he/she is a professor at a university, but also because he/she graduated with the knowledge on rehetoric. The English professor has his/her own situated ethos. So when students come to class every day, the class already sees their professor as a credible source. Thus, ethos is your image, whether you are a credible source of information or not depends on how you present yourself, and how well you present your material. If you seem informed about an issue people may regard you as intelligent. The way that you speak, how you interact with an audience, and the clothes you are wearing also encompasses your

The filmmaker uses ethos to try to convince the viewer of the credibility being used across the broadcast. For example “whales live equivalent to a human's life span” is a prime example of ethics because it is the moral principle of the lifetime of a killer whale being compared to a human’s lifetime. When the producer mentions how the “female whale lives to about a hundred years old and the males live to about fifty to sixty years old” is also credible facts of killer whales life span. “Tilikum was…

One way Nicholas Carr persuades the reader by using Ethos is that he mentions a person who is well versed in the topic about media in general. In paragraph four he mentions Marshal McLuhan and how he provides brief details about the media and how it changes the way we think and comprehend information (Carr 2). This is an example of Ethos because Marshal McLuhan…

Now I am more familiar with the terms ethos, pathos, and logos within writing. I believe the knowledge of all three terms help me to create more effective persuasive paper in the future. I’m going to write short examples of each of them; Ethos refers to one’s own character image or reputation in the eyes of an audience. Pathos refers to appeals to your audience’s emotions or sympathies. Logos I like the most in the context of…

Ethos being the first of the three rhetorical appeals is very important when trying to maintain your audience’s interest. Machiavelli does a great job of persuading his audience with the ethos appeal. An example Machiavelli uses to persuade his audience with ethos is found in “The Qualities of a Prince”, “If we examine this carefully, we shall see that he was more merciful than the Florentine people, who in order to avoid being considered cruel, allowed the destruction of Pistoia” (Machiavelli, 43). Ethos is presented here by showing an example from past history on how someone in power had messed up by being too merciful than the Florentine people. By using these examples Machiavelli uses ethos to show the past history and he is able to gain the trust from his audience because of the knowledge he demonstrates on different instances that have happened in other ruler’s pasts. Michael Moore is able to appeal to his audience by using ethos as well as…

Armstrong applies the use of ethos very clearly in his article. For example, “I still don’t completely understand it; all I can do is tell you what happened”. This shows that he is writing credible work and that his ideas are non-bias. He is telling the story as is and he is not trying to lead you on. Lance also uses pathos to persuade his audience as well. An example of this would be when stated “I have cancer”. Cancer is a serious disease and the thought of having it draws on someone’s emotions quite strongly. This quote…

He uses ethos by demonstrating credibility by using Mark Twain who is a famous american author. The author gives different examples of what Mark Twain previously aforementioned to provide evidence for his cause. Mark Twain goes on to state that it is impossible for “William of Stratford” to be “Shakespeare” because he simply did not have enough knowledge as a common man to write the plays that only a noble man would know. The author continues on by using logos based off his knowledge, like using cause and effect of what really could have been Shakespeare's life. Stating that if he had an extensive knowledge in literature than who taught him how to write, or why wasn't the rest of his family…

In the reading selection “Coping with Methuselah”, the authors Aaron and Schwartz work well together to convey their ideas using all three principles of argument to their readers. Aaron and Schwartz literally begin with the principle of ethos in their passage titled “About the Authors” which states their professional accomplishments (articles they have written, major universities they are associated with) individually and together. Immediately this reader is convinced that their knowledge base is extensive and they are a credible source. Ifeel it was especially convincing for these two colleagues to voice the same arguments to its audience together. There is more authority when two professionals with such expertise are voicing the same concerns.…

Ethos is a form of establishing your credibility to other. Brutus’s use of Ethos far surpasses Antony’s because of how he reminds the crowd how honorable he is and how much more honor he has than Antony. Brutus states, “believe me for mine honour, and have respect to mine honour, that you may believe” (3.2.2-4). This is proves that Brutus compared to Antony has better ethos while Antony’s ethos is “I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he thrice refuse; was this ambition” (3.2.24-25). This is stating that Caesar thrice denies the crown but the reason he had done this was to seem less ambitious no matter how ambitious he was which he was very ambitious to be the king of rome. This example of ethos is inferior to Brutus’s because the way Antony uses his form of ethos is to show that Caesar did not deserve this connecting to Caesar more than the people of rome. While Brutus’s statements have personal connections to the crowd way more than Antony’s because of how his example is something that could happen to the them more than just one person. Ethos is a major key on connecting with this crowd by establishing credibility and how Brutus demonstrates his connections show better ethos than…

Ethos is used in a very ideal way because, it tells how a Native American feels about how they are being stereotyped. This makes the author credible because she is using her real life examples to show first hand how people being are being mislead into the culture of Native Americans. This makes the article extremely convincing because the source of information, is coming from the best source possible, which the author herself. The source is the Native American author who feels down emotionally because of the stereotyping of Native Americans. There is no better source than this, and this source can give real life examples of situations that have occurred to them. Also, this source cannot be deemed uncredible, because there is no other source to go to that will tell you that the words of the Native American author are incorrect. Ethos deals with the credibility of an author, and I think the authors use this the best out of the three ideas, due to the fact of that the source that the authors used was the best source that could be used for this type of…

Using ethos is an advantage because we trust someone that is friends with another person to be a good judge of their friend's character.Using logos is easy because everything makes sense and it’s factual so it’s easy for everyone to understand why something is a correct reason for doing an action.I think the disadvantages of using pathos is that sometimes you shouldn’t use your emotions to reason. Using ethos is a disadvantage because there will always be somebody more credible or someone that more authority than you, some people don’t respect authority. Using logos is a disadvantage because sometimes logic will be too cold and a difficult way of persuading a person you need to tap into the human emotional side to them not the logical cerebral side of…

Ethos or ethics is something needed for people to believe in what the writer is talking about, because if there is someone who is talking about something they know nothing about it is not very convincing to the public.
