Throughout Homer’s The Odyssey, the characters often use the ancient Greek ideal of xenia for their own benefit. This exemplar of hospitality is a cornerstone of ancient Greek religion and culture. The rites of suppliants are even protected by their most powerful god, Zeus. However, people would often try to leverage their host with this social obligation.…

As said by Italian Renaissance historian Niccolo Machiavelli, “Never attempt to win by force what can be one by deception.” By this he means that one’s brain is a powerful force, one to be reckoned with, and that it can outmatch any force. This is shown in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, and has held true in my personal life as well.…

In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus exemplifies the aristocratic man idealized in Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morality. Nietzsche depicts the aristocratic man, the noble man, very distinctly with qualities of mentality and behavior. An aristocratic man embraces his sovereignty, relishes in life, and refuses to feel guilt. Odysseus lives what Nietzsche describes as a good and noble life, a life characterized by action and war. Odysseus not only is King of Ithaca, but also the epitome of the aristocratic man in attitude and action.…

One might be angered that most of their child hood and lifetime stories are all based on archetypes. A simple skeleton of all tales, novels and stories alike. Until Discovering what an archetype was, you may have though that The Odyssey and Harry Potter were completely different tales, however this assumption would be wrong. Odysseus, a true hero destined by society to have the falls and triumphs of a hero, as well as “the chosen one” That was Harry. Both chosen by society, both had ambushed plans as well as successful adventures. Analyzing this story using a thought process based on archetypical example and themes, you can clearly see the naked structure of the ‘Willing Hero’ Archetype.…

As William Makepeace Thackeray once said, "bravery never goes out of fashion." This theme is evident both in modern day life and ancient literature. As America found out this past August, men will go to all ends to prove their masculinity. William Lawson, of Louisiana, is among the more recent examples of this. Years after leaving the Marine Corps as a grunt, without fighting experience, he masqueraded as a Marine Corps General. His deception lasted for decades before his story unraveled. Similarly, men throughout time have come up with ways of cloaking their foolishness with a deep blanket of machoism. Such is the tale of Odysseus, of Homer's Odyssey. As Book Nine of the Odyssey reveals, Odysseus' tactful nature belies the many mistakes he makes.…

The word “archetype” today means a stereotype; a definition of something that comes to us naturally and that is plugged into our consciousness. So where did we get these archetypes from? What society began the main traits that our characters have followed ever since? Our society has followed behind Greek influences since the beginning, probably because Greece is one of the oldest known civilizations to humans. Literature as well, has been followed up to today. Homers’ epic poem, The Odyssey, presents us with a story following what we would call a typical hero, Odysseus, who is on the journey home to Ithaca from the Trojan War. Although it would seem easy and rapid for him to reach Ithaca where his beloved wife and son are waiting for him, he is cursed by the gods Zeus, and especially Poseidon who plague him with obstacles that prevent him from reaching home for ten years. To deal with these obstacles, Odysseus transforms into more than just a war hero, but the ideal hero who uses wisdom and practicality to find his way home. Although the epic poem of a war hero's journey is over 2,500 years old, there is textual evidence that even today we still use the types of characters mentioned in the poem. In the poem it is obvious that…

Iris and not the part of my eye, the goddess of the rainbow. Yes, the beautiful striped wavelength of different color light you see after it's rains. However, Iris wasn’t just the rainbow goddess; she was also the messenger of the Olympian gods and the personal assistant to Hear, ( I'm the assistant for the basketball coach) the wife and one of the three sisters of Zeus(I have the three sisters as well). This is why she was usually portrayed standing beside Zeus and Hera, sometimes serving nectar from her jug. Yet, as cupbearer of the gods, Iris was often drawn the same as Hebe (goddess of youth and the cupbearer of the gods ) in ancient Greek art; kinda sounds like what I do as team manager. This explains the double meaning of Iris’s name; Iris, meaning "the rainbow" and Eiris, meaning "messenger". Iris traveled almost everywhere; even the dark underworld. Someday I hope to travel everywhere I could. Moreover, Iris was chosen by the gods to carry sacred water from the Styx (the river of the Oaths) to Mount Olympus for the gods to swear by and if they lie they would be punished. She was chosen to do this because she could move with the speed of the wind. See people who lie always get a little something called karma…

The myth about Iris that I enjoyed was called Iris and Demeter. It is about the time when Hades’s with Zeus’s approval, kidnapped Demeter’s daughter Persephone and brought her to the underworld. When Demeter finally found out it was too late to save her daughter who already was turned into the queen of the dead. Demeter was so sad and upset that she stopped doing all of her duties and shape shifted into an old lady so that she could just spend her time crying. The crops died and the people on earth started to have a very hard life. Zeus sent Iris to Demeter with a message saying to focus back on the crops. Demeter ignored Iris and refused to listen. All of the gods and goddesses talked to Demeter but, only her mother’s words sunk in. Her mother…
