Life is a set of challenges designed to test our strength and perseverance. In the book Call of the Wild, Buck experiences many conflicts, one of the biggest being his environment. Buck was yanked from his warm and lush home in the civilized Santa Clara valley and forced to move to the harsh and unforgiving north. My mother similarly moved often during her childhood, often not staying in one place longer than two years. They both had to persevere through many challenges and although my mom's challenges weren't life or death, she had to adapt and overcome.
For one thing, Buck, from the book Call of the Wild, is forced into a new place, where he has to learn a new set of primitive rules. He faces a variety of strenuous and exhausting challenges. After he conquers each one he grows stronger and wiser to the struggles that continue to plague his life. One of the many issues Buck faces is conflicts with the lead dog, Spitz. The two alphas are always picking fights with each other trying to get the other one to admit defeat. Things finally reach the climax when Buck and Spitz finally duel to the death. Buck is the winner and defeats Spitz. He also had to learn how to survive in the subzero climate. Buck had to learn to dig a hole to stay warm at night. This keeps them warm at night. He follows suit and never has that problem again. Other things Buck learns is to not play by the rules in a fight, listen to the master, pull his weight, and many other tricks to thriving in the life as a sled dog. As he learns new things he also teaches other dogs. Eventually Buck defeats Spitz and becomes the leader. He teaches the new dogs to work hard and do their part.
