1. What is a code of ethics and provide an example of relevant principles and examples as it relates to working with groups in Community Services?
Codes of ethics set out the standard of practice expected of professional service providers. Codes of ethics are often based on the general principles which underpin the work of the type of profession. Codes of ethics describe the standards of practice expected by groups of people to whom it refers. Some principle examples when working with groups in community services;
- Value and respect each young person as an individual in his/her own rights
- Respect the relationship of the young person to his/her parents, his/her siblings, other members of his/her family and other significant persons
- Facilitate the optimal growth and development of each individual young person to achieve his or her potential and goals
- Help each young person for whom he or she bears responsibility by preventing problems where possible, by offering protection where necessary
- Use information appropriately, respecting the privacy of young people, maintaining confidentiality
- Oppose at all times any form of discrimination, or exploitation of young people, and preserve their rights

Zip the lip. Silence will show the colleague that the joke wasn’t appreciated and not supported. It might be possible if there is a good relationship with the colleague to approach them after the group session has commenced and let them know that in general some young people may have found it offensive, and that it might be a more ethical practice to not tell these types of jokes in the future group sessions. If this goes unnoticed and it happens again inform a supervisor or manager. Also take notes that this happened within the group so there is a paper
