Christopher Columbus has a very diverse legacy. For most people he is known as the man who discovered America, but for some he is known for the Columbian Exchange. His remarkable story revolves around four major voyages between 1492 and 1502. He was a navigator and as such he sailed and traveled for many years. He spent most of those years trying to find another route westward that would lead him to Asia. Christopher Columbus was also a religious man and for the most part he often allowed his Bible to guide him and help determine the size of the world. His estimation was not believed by many people and because of this he didn’t have a lot of support on his side for the expedition. Nevertheless, Columbus sailed off on his first voyage on October
Columbus returned the following year in 1493 and brought along with him, seventeen ships and plenty of men to help look around the island and establish a settlement. When he arrived, he found that all the men he had left behind, were dead. In 1498, Columbus made another voyage to the New World. Deterioration of the Hispaniola settlement had begun because of the settler’s feelings of betrayal by the claims Columbus was making of riches and the horrible management his brothers were doing while he was away. Conditions were so bad when he returned that he was arrested and brought back to Spain in chains. By 1502 most of his charges were dropped but all of his titles had been taken away. He was getting old and as such he wanted to make one last trip to the Atlantic to prove that he wasn’t lying about the abundant of riches he had promised them, so he begged the Spanish king to allow him to do so and cover all the expenses. Columbus made it to Panama, where he was attacked by hostile natives and because of the attack he had to leave behind two of his ships.
