Columbus returned the following year in 1493 and brought along with him, seventeen ships and plenty of men to help look around the island and establish a settlement. Conditions were so bad when he returned that he was arrested and brought back to Spain in chains. By 1502 most of his charges were dropped but all of his titles had been taken away. He was getting old and as such he wanted to make one last trip to the Atlantic to prove that he wasn’t lying about the abundant of riches he had promised them, so he begged the Spanish king to allow him to do so and cover all the expenses.
