How Can Virtual Reality Improve Education?

Virtual Reality is changing the way individuals view and interact with the world and it is not just for video games anymore. In the educational context virtual reality can enhance and successfully improve education. As a graduate student in Second Language Acquisition I am interested in exploring how virtual environments can be integrated in the language curriculum to aid and enhance students’ learning. The traditional language textbook has become an outdated educational tool which does not offer a comprehensive view of how the world is continuously changing and teachers must consider the potential of technology to promote students’ development.
In language education virtual reality in particular can immerse students in authentic environments representing the target culture. Many college students do not have the opportunity to travel the world and explore the …show more content…
Whether it is a language course, an art class or a healthcare program, the versatile features of virtual reality will enhance students’ learning process. Being immersed a new and intriguing context will increase students’ motivation and aid in gaining an in-depth understanding of the educational content. Through interactive and experiential lessons that utilize virtual reality videos, speech-recognition features and smart sensory gloves, teachers can give students new experiences and learning modalities which were unattainable before. It is now up to educational institutions, scholars, professionals and instructors to understand that this technology is gaining momentum and it is not just for fun. Research studies with empirical results might help in informing decision makers about the potential of virtual reality which should not be wasted but rather exploited. This website helps teachers that need some assistance in teaching their kids, even if they all learn at different paces. They provide practical solutions to the problems of a language teacher whose equipment, as a rule, consists of nothing more than books and classroom. They include black-board, chart maps, pictures, flannel-boards, film strips, slides, epidiascope and actual objects that facilitate the process of teaching. The function of each of these in helping the teaching process is discussed below. BLACK-BOARD: A big strong piece of wood, called black-board, is the oldest associate of the teacher but an essential teaching aid. It is used to reading and writing to the pupil. Anything to which the teacher wants to draw the attention of the pupil, is written on it, e.g. difficult words, phrase patterns, structure patterns, grammar works, questions to test comprehension. In this way the teacher finds his lessons more interesting, lively and effective. It is an important means of picture composition. CHARTS AND MAPS: Since all diagrams cannot be drawn on black-board, they need to be made on charts. A good number of sentences illustrating some points can be written on the chart with some diagrams. Besides sentence chart, we may have substitution table charts and vocabulary charts. Different colors should be used to bring in variety, decoration and effect. It should be big enough to accommodate the necessary materials with words written in bold letters. Charts are very useful for presenting and practicing structures, vocabulary items and compositions. Maps may be used for displaying the location of places, mountains, rivers, etc. PICTURES: Pictures comprise text pictures and class pictures.
