I am a careers advice for IT personnel and I have been asked to write out information about personal attributes valued by employers in work document. I will also explain why a technician will need to have these attributes and the qualifications they needs. The qualifications that a technician should have are: ICT Systems Support – PC Maintenance Level 1, Certificate or Diploma in ICT Systems Support Level 2, Certificate in ICT Systems and Principles Level 2, Diploma in ICT Professional Competence Level 2. In a working job you will be picked up on three working attributes that will be valued by the employers. These attributes are: specific, general and attitude. There are a lot of skills for each one …show more content…
of the three that can identify to the employer what type of person you are and what type of job would be best for you towards IT.
Specific
A specific attributes would be attributes/skills that specify in what the job is about. These are essential to have specific attributes because if you have lack of skill with most of them then you will not be hired for the job. Specific attributes are: Technical knowledge, good working procedures (e.g health and safety, security). Technical knowledge is the most important because if you have no technical knowledge about the job, then you will not be able to accomplish any work in the job so you will have no chance of getting hired by the employers. Technical knowledge is most important in IT because you need to know what to do with a computer. For example, if a technician did not know what to do when they are sent to fix a computer then the person who sent them will instantly tell them that they are not right for the job and also they are at risk for themselves if the technician messes with a computer the wrong way.
General
A general attributes is a characteristic that the employer would ask the employed. These will tell the employer what skills you have and how it can help with the job that you are applying for. General attributes are: planning and organisational skills, communication skills, team working skills, determination, punctuality, time management and written numerical and verbal skills. Communication skills is important because nearly every job involves communication at one point so if you have bad communication skills, then the job might not be completed properly . It’s important having good and correct communication skills as a technician because if you will understand what the problem is and you need help to fix it, then you need to make it clear and understandable to your associates what is needed to fix the problem. Planning and organisation is another important one because an IT technician will need to plan and know what they will need to do to fix when they are helping repairing a computerised device. This skill will help show the employer that you will know what you are doing and you will be organised when performing your job. Determination is a big skill that will get you a good chance to get the job as a technician because if the employer knows that you are determined to finish the job then they will know you will be a hard worker. Determination is the key to finishing a job because once you are determined then you will have the ability to finish the job good and quick. Without the skill of being determined then you possibly won’t have the ability to finish the job the best way you can. Punctuality is a reason why some people will get fired from their job because if they are ever late to their job or not turn up at all, then it will show to the employer that they have no ambition to work for them and they would be wasting their wage money on someone who doesn’t even turn up. If you have a good reputation for your punctuality then the employer will know you have the ambition and it also links to determination to turn up to the job and finish the task in hand. Written numerical and verbal skills is the skill that shows if you are good with numbers and sound sophisticated because if you are good with these skills, then the employer will know that you are professional and also shows off sings of intelligence and if the employer knows you are intelligent then they know it will be a good attribute to have you aboard the company. A technician may not need these skills to fix computers but they will need to have an understanding and sound professional for their job.
Attitudes
Attitudes are what the employed prefer when it comes to working; it is their own skill that they think they have and why they think that would be compatible for the job they are applying for. These will tell the employer what you are confident in performing when you are working. Attitudes are: Self-motivation, leadership qualities, problem solving skills, dependability, respect and independent working. Self- motivation is a good personal attribute because if you motivate yourself to complete the job then you will get it done quicker. A technician would want motivation to be determined to know the problem of a computerised device and to fix it. Leadership qualities shows that you are willing to lead a group that you have been asked to manage or you know your job is to manage them. If you are a good leader then your team that you are leading will respect you and listen to your commands because they know that you would be a professional team manager. Problem solving is a skill that shows you are capable of tackling a problem that is set in your job, they will apply to an unexpected problem that could happen when a technician is fixing a computer (for example, if they are set to fix a jack in a monitor, and they see another problem, then they could have the problem solving skill top fix that as well). Dependability will prove if you are reliable to finish a job that has been set. Being reliable is good because that will increase your reputation with a job that you have been set and could improve your trust with people in the near future. Independent working is a good important self-skill with being a technician because they normally work on their own if they are fixing a computer because it normally doesn’t take more than one person to fix a computer. Independency is also good because it shows that you are capable of finishing a job yourself and they will show to your boss that you can have no problem finishing a job when working on your own.
Security
All organisations have sensitive and confidential data information that they keep filed. Employers have a duty to keep this safe. Some organisations ask employers to sign an non- disclosure agreements, which means that the employee is not allowed to discuss sensitive and confidential information which individuals or groups who are outside the organisation, either while employed by the organisations or after the leave. In addition, organisations can implement a series of physical and logical security techniques to ensure that data and information is secure.
Physical security technique includes locks on doors and alarm systems to prevent unauthorised access to computers and/or paper files. Many organisations also prohibit stuff from using USB flash drives in their systems or from making CD or DVD copies of data. Some compiles even remove these devices to reduce the tempt ion of copying files.
Logical security techniques include encryption protocols (designed to scramble the data and make it useless to anyone who does not have the decryption software) and password protection.
Health and Safety at work
Health and safety is important in any work place because it is the judgment on if your work environment is safe or not.
Health and safety checks minimize the risk of a hazard to be caused in the work place. IT involves a lot of health and safety checks because IT is based on computers and electricity and errors of safety may increase the risk of a fire or an electrical hazard.
Wiring
It has got to be checked that the wiring and cables isn’t in knots/all together because it will increase the risk of a fire to be caused with all of the wires. The wire is also best to be checked that the wire is straight to decrease a hazard risk. To prevent this, the wires must be untangled and kept separate. Also the wires can have a chance to have a malfunction and refuse to connect the electricity which could corrupt computerised devices.
Positioning
Positioning is important to check because physical accidents can happen even when you don’t touch anything. If you sit too loose to the computer screen then you will increase the risk of damaging your eyes and possibly go blind. Also if you sit in the wrong position whilst watching the screen, then you could increase the chance of damaging a bone or a muscle. To prevent this you must sit in a chair normal, keep a good distance away from the computer and also sit up straight whilst being on the
computer.
