Expository writing, in general, is present everywhere. When you pick up a magazine or examine a newspaper article on the newsstand, you are reading a form of exposition because the author's main purpose of writing that article or essay is to inform the reader about a topic. In the classroom, many students are required to produce research papers about a specific topic, such as migration patterns of birds. The purpose of that research paper is to inform the reader, the teacher, about what are the migratory patterns of birds. Finally, at the workplace, many people are required to create business reports and memorandums to inform their supervisors and co-workers about the company's finances and progress. In order to analyze these expository samples effectively, you must first read the essay, determine the type of expository essay it is, perform a SOAPSTTONE on the essay sample, evaluate whether if the author was successful in conveying his or her purpose to the audience, and lastly, determine any personal relevance to the essay. The expository essay "How to Operate the Shower Curtain" by Ian Frazier will be used as a reference and model expository essay to make each step of the process more clear.…

The polish born secret agent, Krystyna Skarbek was a heroine of World War 2. Using a false name she risked death on multiple occasions in support of Britain’s military intelligence and campaign. Ian Fleming openly stated that in his first James Bond book, (Casino Royale) the character Vesper Lynd, who was the iconic and original Bond girl, was inspired by Skarbek. Before her famous exploits she tried a role in politics but was turned down, and after tensions rose between nations and World War 2 was on the approach she registered for the British secret service. She was an ordinary person who underwent a transformation and began to do extraordinary things. When given the correct push and encouragement anyone can do extraordinary things especially if there is a conflict that requires it to happen. One single thing can’t drive everyone but I strongly believe that each and every person can find something that motivates them to go on and do great things. Using Krystyna as our example I will prove this.…

I have chosen two pieces of music, both played with a woodwind instrument, but from two very different regions. The first one with title “Lam thang san” is played by a Thai performer using a free-reed aerophone that accompanies the vocalists. The second one is a Native American flute performance with use of an end-blown flute. The title of the piece is “Taos Pueblo Courting Song”. The music gives audiences a gentle touch of peacefulness and solitude of earth. There is an obvious contrast of traditional cultures between Thailand and Native American. However, there are still some musical links between these two distinct cultures in the six elements of music which are pitch, duration, timbre, texture, dynamics and structures. The two obvious musical links in the two pieces are the improvisatory free rhythm and imitations.…
