Emily Sullivan EN 104
Story: “Family Treasures,” 2015
Author: Shirley Jackson 1916-1965 (Shirley struggled to fit in her whole life, because she was overweight and did not meet the expectations of her family. This represents her life, because she did not fit in at her first college and she was unhappy.) Central character: Anne Waite is a shy, kept-to-herself, sophomore in college, whose mother passed away the previous semester and her father previously deceased. Everyone perceives her as innocent and shy and leaves her alone, but little do they know, she’s the one behind all the stolen belongings in the dormitory. Other characters: Miss McBride is the young, house mother, who wears a specific pair of jet earrings that Anne steals,

It is important for children to make their own decisions on how they look at the world. But it is up to the parent to influence their child on how the outlook is. Children get most of their perception of culture from their parents. Three ideas that play a major role on a child’s perspective on culture are: social interactions between parent and child, the passing down of heirlooms, and emotional connections. These concepts are seen in the poems Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde and My Mother Pieced Quilts by Teresa Palomo Acosta.…

Anne began to mature in the annex while writing in her diary given to her by her father. Writing the diary helped her to understand her frustrations and feelings. It helped her to discover who she was as well as not to take anything for granted. The diary helped her see how immature she was and how she had treated her mother bad and the Van Daans. She started treating them nicer. She was the only one that gave everyone a Hanukkah gift. When she realized she could talk to Peter, she realized not to take their friendship for granted because at the time, Peter was really the only friend she had.…

They were soon joined by Jewish dentist, Fritz Pfeffer, one of Otto’s Jewish co-workers, Hermann van Pels, his wife, and their son, Peter, who was close in age with Anne. When thinking about the question (can music affect the listener?) many thoughts and notions come to my mind that can either refute or agree with this purposed question, but the opinion that I will explain in detail with clear and concise evidence within the body of this paper is that music does in fact affect the listener in many positive ways. People tend to listen to a genre/style of music based upon his/her mood or feelings at that very point and time, for example if I were to listen to a song from the genre of rap or R&B I would become in a more upbeat, happy mood if I already wasn’t feeling that way; but if I was listening to a Punk Rock or Country song I would probably be or become in an angry/depressed mood. My notions that music does in fact affect the listeners’ mood/feelings will be explained with my own examples of 2 songs that have a major affect on my mood as well as the ideas presented by Aristotle in relation to that of music and its purposes/forms. I feel that Aristotle brings up very important ideas that go along with my thoughts on the strong affect that music does have on a listeners’ mood and/or state of mind which I will go into great detail in the preceding paragraphs of this reflective paper. So for the first portion of my paper I will discuss the 2 examples of songs that I strongly feel affect my personal mood/ state of mind when I hear and closely listen to beat/tempo that are included in the particular genre/style of these 2 particular songs.…
