Most people will do whatever it takes to remove themselves from the fear inducing situation, and sometimes it can be a very selfish act. In this dystopian society from every life born one had to die, this was in effect to balance out population. The husband- Wehling- was in disarray while his wife was in labor, because he could not find three people willing to die for his children. So instead, “Wehling shot Dr. Hitz dead. ‘There’s room for one-- a great big one,’he said. And then he shot Leora Duncan” (Vonnegut). This made room for two children and seconds later he commited the most selfish act, he shot himself. He was so afraid to lose his children he became a murderer, and took away innocent people's lives. And in the end he lost his children anyways because now he would never be able to meet them. Like Wehling there were others that were being selfish in a time of fear. Tom Leonard, in the article “'It Looked like They Were Blinded by Smoke... They Just Walked to the Edge and Fell out.' Victims Who Plummeted from Twin Towers,” talked about people called jumpers, or those who chose to jump out of the building during 9/11 rather than face the fire.
